China auto sales hit record 2.03 mn in January

AFP - Auto sales in China, the world's largest car market, hit a record 2.03 million vehicles last month, driven by robust demand ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year, an industry group said Thursday.

Auto sales tend to pick up before the holiday, which starts Sunday, as people spend their New Year bonuses.

Eight more cities in China, the world's biggest auto market, are likely to announce policies restricting new vehicle purchases, an official at the automakers association said, as Beijing tries to control air pollution.

China Requires 30% of State Cars Use Alternative Energy

China is mandating that electric cars make up at least 30 percent of government vehicle purchases by 2016, the latest measure to fight pollution and cut energy use after exempting the autos from a purchase tax.

Guangdong to promote use of green vehicles

According to the latest policy published by the Guangdong NDRC, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, should introduce 10,000 and 25,000 new energy vehicles by 2015.

Moreover, the policy requested relevant departments to speed up the construction of battery-charging stations and other ancillary facilities.
