Robots to wipe out jobs en masse

Within five years robots and so-called intelligent agents will eliminate many positions in customer service, trucking and taxi services, amounting to 6 percent of jobs, according to a report by Forrester.

"By 2021, a disruptive tidal wave will begin," said Forrester vice president Brian Hopkins. "Solutions powered by artificial intelligence/cognitive technology will displace jobs, with the biggest impact felt in transportation, logistics, customer service and consumer services."

Intelligent agents, chat bots and digital assistants include Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, Alphabet's GoogleNow and Facebook's Messenger bots. They are powered by artificial intelligence and they can already understand a person's behavior, interpret their needs and even make decisions for them.

AI-based services and apps will eventually change most industries, resulting in a redistribution of jobs, Forrester found. Self- driving cars, for example, will have wide- ranging impacts on both the auto and transportation industries.

Facebook and Google are right now in the process of creating a baseline set of artificial intelligence and cognitive services. By 2021, others will tap those tools to scale their business, the report found. Messenger now has more than 33,000 bots, helping firms to automate once costly back-office processes.

not vested

One way to profit is with Global Robotics & Automation ETF (Nasdaq: ROBO).

This ETF was launched in December of 2015 and holds a basket of 84 companies that specialize in robotics, automation and artificial intelligence.

Today, ROBO has $105 million in assets under management, average daily volume of 18,000 shares and an expense ratio of 0.95%.

Investors clearly have robot stocks on their radar. ROBO is having a great year. Shares are up 17% in 2016, more than a 200% premium to the S&P 500′s 6% return.

The one weakness I see in this ETF is its dividend yield of 0.24% is more than an 80% discount to the S&P 500′s 2.0% yield.

If you’re looking to pump up your dividend, I’ve got a secretive robotics manufacturer out of Japan that fits the bill.

Artificial intelligence

Self-driving cars are just one application for intelligent machines. Working in tech, I can see the broader impact of this machine learning trend.

It’s now becoming simple and routine to add artificial intelligence (AI) to everyday digital products – and the change is therefore happening very fast.

Everything from shopping suggestions, to social media matches and credit approvals are made with insights provided by AI.

Over time, we’ll see a dramatic acceleration of this technology.

It’s inevitable that computers will outsmart humans – not necessarily for all tasks, but for many.

Even advanced professions, such as law, are potentially at risk of being hollowed-out by AI.

Why pay a solicitor if a computer is cheaper, faster and more reliable?
