The Stock Market Could Be Nearing a Short-Term Peak, Analysts Say

Near-term indicators are overbought and turning negative, Fundstrat says.

by Kinsey Grant

Near-term indicators that track two- to four-week shifts are currently "overbought and turning negative as equity markets rally to resistance".

While the stock market readies for some downside, U.S. 10-year Treasury bond yields have "rebounded back to their 2017 downtrend," analysts added, showing initial signs of stalling or peaking.

Yale fellow, former Morgan Stanley chief economist: A correction looms

By Shawn Langlois

‘We are long overdue for a correction’

The combo of lofty valuations and rising interest rates is about to wreak havoc on markets, potentially before the end of the year.

MONDAY

New highs continued through Friday. A new month and quarter could bring some more buying into the market. After that, then what? Will new highs become the targets for the algorithms to sell?

After all, David Stockman this weekend says to get out of the 'casino' markets now lest ye be caught in the 40% to 70% meltdown he predicts. He is so vocal, so wild-eyed in his statements and comments, I have a hard time taking him seriously.

At some point, poof; but what makes Stockman right THIS time when so many before, including him, have been wrong? Nothing.

No, you look at the market and what the leaders do. Perhaps the hope regarding the tax reform proposal gets dashed as the 'experts' issue more and more reports on the 'cost' of the proposal.

The point is, no one knows when the market cracks and rolls over. We will play the moves the market gives. For now, upside, but watching over the shoulder. We will do that until the leaders break and roll over. Then we play the downside and make money from that versus wringing our hands and retreating to dark spaces.

Chart of the day: Dow Jones Industrial Average

by Nicole Elliott

With a National Day holiday this week on the mainland, we look across to some important foreign markets, today the Dow Industrials.

Good volume this year, despite some of the lowest observed volatility on record, as it managed to post an eighth consecutive bullish quarterly candle.

Despite record bullish momentum it is more overbought on a monthly basis than it has been in more than 20 years as it prints a sixth consecutive higher monthly candle.

We remind readers of the Rule of Eight (to 10): If a market moves in one direction only for between eight and 10 consecutive periods it is overbought and due a correction. This is the case here and with the S&P 500.

CHARTS: Stock market headwinds building

by Dr. Richard Smith

Historically, the stock market is bullish when the US Dollar is bearish.

For the moment it looks like the dollar could easily rise to the $95 – $97 level where it would encounter heavy overhead price-volume resistance.

I’m currently looking for the US dollar to rally to the $95 level… and for the US stock market to take a breather… possibly even as much as 5% – 7%.

If the dollar falls below $91, however, it will be a huge confirmation of even higher prices and valuations for US stocks.

Stocks:

Since August, the stock market has shown upwards mobility and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.

Based on this pattern, this bullish reality will continue for the next four weeks.
