At abt 230pm gmt, it seems a bomb went off at trafalgar square. Police were swarming the place when I heard a loud explosion. It could hv been the bomb disposal unit's effort in diffusing the suspicious package. I didn't hang around too long to endanger myself...
Scary city!!:(

What is the "City of London Corporation"?

A quick google search yielded this piece of data:

"The City of London is not part of England or the United Kingdom. It is a privately owned corporation masquerading as a county – often talking heads on TV will even call it London PLC.

It isn’t under the power of the Queen or the Government. Her majesty and the Prime Minister are subordinate to the Lord Mayor and have to listen to him and his delegates on financial decisions; that is why during the financial news they always cut to “the City” for updates.

If the Queen enters the Mayor’s city, she is met by him at the perimeter “Temple Bar” and must bow and ask permission to enter his private and sovereign state. He will dress in full regalia while she and her handlers dress in regular clothing."

Tube workers to strike next week

London Underground workers have voted for three days of strike action next week over pensions and other benefits, the RMT union announced Tuesday.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), which represents around 1,000 employees at the Tube Lines engineering subsidiary, said its members will walk out at 4pm on Tuesday until the same time on Friday.

The staff work on maintaining and upgrading the Piccadilly, Northern and Jubilee lines and provide services including emergency repairs across the entire network.

Looks like the FTs are dominating the list ...

Wealth of Britain's richest hits record high

Britain's richest people reached record levels of wealth in 2011 even as the country was slipping back towards recession, according to the annual Sunday Times Rich List.

The combined fortunes of the 1,000 richest people in Britain rose by 4.7 percent to £414.26 billion despite high unemployment and harsh government cuts, beating the previous record of £412.85 billion set in 2008.

The number of billionaires also hit a new high of 77.

Indian-born steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal held onto the top spot for the eighth year running, although his fortune dropped in value by 27 percent to £12.7 billion as the share price of his main business ArcelorMittal plunged.

Just behind him with £12.3 billion came Uzbek-born metals and mining tycoon Alisher Usmanov, who holds about 30 percent of the parent company of Arsenal football club.

Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovitch was third on the list with £9.5 billion.

The wealthiest British-born billionaire was the Duke of Westminster, who owns a central London property empire, but he slipped from third place to seventh, with his fortune estimated at £7.35 billion.

New entrants included Andrey Andreev, 38, a London-based Russian businessman who founded dating website Badoo, with £500 million.

Britain is officially in recession after its economy contracted in the last quarter of 2011 and first of 2012, and the government has suffered a slump in popularity after cutting income tax for top earners in last month's budget.

The government has also made harsh cuts in its spending, with Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron last week standing by the austerity strategy despite fears it is undermining growth.

The Sunday Times list, which includes those for whom Britain is home or their main base of operations, is based on identifiable wealth such as land, property or significant shares in publicly quoted companies, and excludes bank accounts.

-- Britain's top 10 billionaires in the Sunday Times Rich List 2012 (last year's rank in brackets):

1. Lakshmi Mittal and family -- steel -- £12.7 billion (1st)

2. Alisher Usmanov -- steel -- £12.3 billion (2nd)

3. Roman Abramovich -- oil, industry -- £9.5 billion (3rd)

4. Sri and Gopi Hinduja -- industry, finance -- £8.6 billion (9th)

5. Leonard Blavatnik -- industry -- £7.58 billion (6th)

6. Ernesto and Kirsty Bertarelli -- pharmaceuticals -- £7.4 billion (5th)

7. The Duke of Westminster -- property -- £7.35 billion (3rd)

8. David and Simon Reuben -- property, Internet -- £7.08 billion (8th)

9. John Fredriksen and family -- shipping -- £6.6 billion (7th)

10. Galen and George Weston and family -- retail -- £5.9 billion (10th)

The Leveson enquiry into phone hacking by News of the World has concluded.

The Select Committee from Sports, Media and Culture opined that Rupert Murdoch is NOT fit to run an international company. They further commented that the 2 murdochs were "wilfully blind" to the hacking incident.

The implication is that they BskyB deal will now be tested and likely be torn apart.
