UK - Bank of England

Postby winston » Thu Feb 09, 2012 9:26 pm

BoE pumps £50 bln into economy

The Bank of England will inject another £50 billion (60 billion euros, $80 billion) into Britain's ailing economy under quantitative easing and keep interest rates at 0.50 percent, it said on Thursday.

"The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee today voted to maintain the official bank rate paid on commercial bank reserves at 0.50 percent," it said. "

The Committee also voted to increase the size of its asset purchase programme, financed by the issuance of central bank reserves, by £50 billion to a total of £325 billion."

Britain pressed to rethink aid after India snubs by Danny Kemp

British Prime Minister David Cameron is facing growing calls to cut huge aid handouts to India after a series of perceived snubs.

Britain was stunned this month when New Delhi announced a big contract to buy French warplanes instead of the UK-backed Eurofighter Typhoon, despite intense efforts by the British government to boost trade.

Angry lawmakers then stepped up pressure on Cameron to axe the more than £1-billion ($1.6-billion, 1.2-billion euro) aid budget for India after reports that the Indian finance minister described the handouts as "a peanut".
