This year, our NDP is in line with the "Spirits" of the Olympic; Shine For Singapore.

Here is an excerpt from Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Defence:

This Year we celebrate our 43rd year of independence.

Singapore has been built by enterprising and hardworking people who have come from near and far to sink their roots here and make Singapore their home. In 40 years, Singaporeans have built a world-class nation. Shared experiences through good as well as difficult times have shaped our society into one that is cohesive and resilient.

Our people have worked hard to make Singapore a dynamic, progressive country; one we are proud to call our home. Our “can do” spirit is seen in how determined we are to purse our hopes and dreams, how we stay united through challenges, and how we work together to excel as one people. These are the qualities that make up our Singapore Spirit – the key to our Success.

Our progress as a nation has also been possible because we have peace and security, allowing us to turn our dreams into reality. We have a strong SAF to protect our country.

Every Singaporean can contribute to the strong foundation that our forefathers have laid for us. We must continue to be vigilant, help one another, upgrade our knowledge and remain united when faced with challenges. We must all be involved in Total Defence. Each of us can make a difference in ensuring that our loved ones and our country remain safe and secure, as we build a better tomorrow with a strong Singapore Spirit.

Just curious, who pays for these dinners? :?:

Also, were you impressed by the quality of these speeches ie. frozen meat & house brands? ;)

TOL: One could actually save more by not eating meat at all. Why stop at frozen food ?

Maybe there was some meat to the speech but it was not reported below :P

TOL: And being bald also means that there is no more need to use house-brand hair gel, hair spray, hair shampoo or hair conditioner :D

S'poreans urged to take precautions in case a downturn occurs
By S Ramesh, Channel NewsAsia
SINGAPORE : Several constituencies have started hosting National Day dinners this weekend.

In their speeches at these National Day functions, ministers and MPs have been urging Singaporeans to take precautions in case there is an economic downturn.

At the same time, they have also been urging the nation to prepare itself for the future and seize the many opportunities that arise.

Speaking at the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC National Day Dinner on Saturday night, Defence Minister and MP for the area, Teo Chee Hean, noted that Singaporeans are shopping wisely.

The consumption of frozen meat has gone up and the sale of house brands has also increased. All these have helped to lower the cost of the weekly shopping basket.

Most importantly, Mr Teo stressed that the community spirit is strong. Constituencies have received generous donations, including rice and other necessities, for distribution to needy residents. - CNA/ms

W: the dinners are paid on an reimbursement basis; usually, attendees have to pay 50%, grassroots 50%.

Currently, AVA is agressively promoting the takeup of these frozen meat through a series of print and TVC consumerism (targeted) campaigns. At least, the frozen meat is a channel for the consumers to source for on a regular basis; hence, quality should be a secondary issue so long the meat is free of contaminants and freshness (over longer storage time) is maintained through sanitisation processes, etc.

Bad news on the tourism front..

Tourists numbers fall in Singapore amid global economic downturn
By Serene Luo

SINGAPORE'S booming tourism market has finally fallen prey to the worldwide economic slowdown, rising inflation and burgeoning oil prices.

In its latest report, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said 4.1 per cent fewer visitors came here in June, compared to the same month last year - a dip for the first time in 51 months.

The number of visitors from Indonesia - Singapore's largest visitor-generating nation - fell from 180,000 to 153,000; while China visitor numbers declined from 77,000 to 70,000 .

Tourists also spent 0.2 per cent less in the first six months of the year, compared to the same period last year.

STB's deputy chairman and chief executive Lim Neo Chian said there was 'a general air of uncertainty, which has impacted consumer sentiments and discretionary spending in many tourism destinations, including Singapore'.

This may continue into the next few months, he said.

Business visitors from countries like the United States, which is suffering a sub-prime crisis, may also find the strong Singapore dollar a turn-off, as hotel rooms and other items will seem more pricey.

Mr Lim said that the STB was monitoring the situation and may 'adjust our strategies or review our targets'.

grassroots : usually the resident committees, comprising neighbours and real people... they are the ones who coordinate those wayang MP meet the people sessions, 7th month Ko Dais, roll out the red carpets, gala dinner ticket pushers, etc..

in simpler terms, the willing slaves

Do they work because they lack family support, their children don't want to give them money or do they work because they enjoy working??? Probably got to dig deeper....

If it is because their children don't want to give them money.. I feel sorry for them.. sigh...

Record high older people working last year
By Goh Chin Lian, Correspondent

MORE older Singaporeans were working last year, compared to the past 16 years.

But many others were still not taking up jobs, especially women.

These were the findings of a report on older residents who were employed as at June last year, released by the Manpower Ministry's Research and Statistics Department on Tuesday.

It found that as at June last year, 47.8 per cent of residents aged 50 and over were employed.

This is up from a low of 35.9 per cent in 1991, when such data was first published. It is also an increase from the previous record high of 46 per cent in 2006.

The bulk of the increase came from older people joining the workforce - the result of sustained economic growth and strong job creation in recent years.

Correspondingly, the proportion of economically inactive older people dropped from 51.9 per cent in June 2006 to 50.4 per cent in June 2007.

Some 495,300 residents belong to this group who remained economically inactive last June. Among them were 113,100 women aged 50 to 64 who had either stopped working for at least a decade or had never worked before.

The Manpower Ministry noted that given the rapid changes in the economy and job requirements, this group of women may lack the skills to find a job.

So programmes to upgrade their skills and prepare them for work will go hand in hand with other efforts to encourage them to go back to work, such as the provision of part-time and flexible work arrangements, it said.

i am sure it is partly to cover living expenses...let's face it...how many people truly enjoy working for others?

i actually feel uncomfortable seeing rather old aunties (60s) clearing tables, emptying rubbish bins, sweeping/mopping floors at mcdonald's..on one hand, they need to survive and if we dont offer such jobs, then how can they live. but yet, as a society, do we want our grandmothers to work?

one way or another, these old folks must have contributed to singapore...even merely propagating is a national service.. and when they are left old and dry without kindreds, perhaps we as a country should consider some scheme to help them... i understand we should not encourage handouts, but rules are catered to masses and there must be exceptions to the rules...

more specifically, it is not difficult to device a policy to provide for the old who are without immediate relatives to care for them. give them a monthly allowance out from our taxes, and it is not as if we are poor a nation. i can imagine the anguish i would feel, helplessly old and no one to turn to for help. end up, becoming beggar or worst, ending my life out of desperation.

compassion, is what defines a people....are we compassionate a nation? or we just talk talk and talk some more...

more goodyears....!!! hip hip hooray...and by the way, increase medical fees...

Water at Pasir Ris Beach contains bacteria also found in human faeces
By May Wong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 30 July 2008 1659 hrs

SINGAPORE: Based on a new international water quality guideline by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Pasir Ris Beach has been identified as one where swimming would not be recommended. However, activities like canoeing and kayaking can continue.

The beach scored a fair grading because it contains an abnormal level of a type of bacteria traditionally found in human faeces and warm-blooded animals.

Accidentally consuming the water at the beach could cause gastro intestinal illnesses and conjunctivitis.

For the first time, advisory signages against swimming will be erected at Pasir Ris Beach from Thursday.

However, authorities said that does not mean the water quality at Pasir Ris has worsened. It is simply because the new WHO standard have now become more stringent.

The other five beaches, like Sentosa Island scored a "Very Good" grading, while East Coast Park and Changi were rated "Good".

The National Environment Agency, which monitors the water quality on a weekly basis, will take necessary actions for Pasir Ris Beach after a year-long study.

The new WHO water quality guidelines apply to all water bodies like the reservoirs which are open for recreational use. - CNA/vm
