Contractor of illegal drain to be prosecuted

SINGAPORE - A contractor which had modified a major drainage pipe without the Public Utilities Board's (PUB) permission will be prosecuted.

PUB said the makeshift drain, which caused Friday's flashfloods along Upper Serangoon Road, had been constructed without its knowledge.

A choke had occurred in the temporary diversion drainage located next to the slip road leading from Upper Serangoon Road to MacPherson Road.

When PUB investigated the flooding, it found debris severely obstructing the flow of rainwater through the drain.

It also found the drain to be undersized and not connected properly.

The contractor had been carrying out road works for the Land Transport Authority (LTA) at Woodsville flyover. It demolished an existing five-metre-stretch of box drain and diverted water flow into two pipes.

However, it did not get permit for the smaller pipes.

While the problem of the choked drain has since been rectified, the contractor will face charges for obstructing and altering the drainage system without proper permit.

PUB's engineers/technicians never check the work in progress during construction ?

PUB and up to the minister in charge should take responsibility....

pap is so morally corrupt by now that the PM does not lead by good example anymore.

when wong can't sing screwed up, he was profusely defended in parliament by ah long san, whereby ah long san bullied WP MP low thia kiang into submission, when LTK called for wks to be held accountable.

so, we now cultivated a culture where the top brass no longer has to be held responsible and it's a scapegoat society we have created..

And what scientific evidence does he has ?

Singapore says major floods unlikely, taking precautionsAsiaOne

SINGAPORE – Major floods such as those affecting Thailand are unlikely to occur in Singapore, but the city-state is taking additional precautions because of the dangers posed by climate change, Singapore's top environment official said.

Singapore, he said, has embarked on several initiatives to better protect itself against floods, including raising the height of reclaimed land by an additional 1 metre above sea level, widening and deepening drains and canals and getting building owners to improve their flood defences.
