Taiwan's Chen acquitted on embezzlement charge

Taiwan court exonerates former president on embezzlement charge

A Taiwan court has acquitted the island's imprisoned former president of embezzling from a special diplomatic fund.

In Tuesday's ruling, the Taipei District Court says prosecutors failed to provide evidence that Chen Shui-bian gave $330,000 to son Chen Chih-chung while he was studying in the United States.

Chen served as Taiwan's president from 2000 to 2008.

In September 2009 he was convicted of embezzling $3.15 million from another fund, receiving bribes worth at least $9 million, and laundering some of the money through Swiss bank accounts.

Chen was sentenced to life imprisonment in that case. He is currently appealing.

He has been detained in a suburban Taipei jail since December 2008.

Watching their MPs brawl on CNBC.

What a bunch of clowns !

Gives democracy a bad name and an excuse for some other countries to continue holding on to an iron grip and to slow their pace of opening things.

Please do learn from the Americans, Australians, Canadians etc.. on how to conduct and behave in Parliament.... Shame ! Shame !

The Secretary-Gen of Taiwan's Kuomingtang Party is here in Singapore for a 3-day visit. This man is a cousin of the Qing Dynasty's last emperor Aisin Gioro Pu-Er. It's ironical that SunYatSen's revolution overthrew the Manchurians but a Manchurian now heads the party:-

This old man really...sighhhhhh....Taiwan was ceded to Japan after the Sino-Japan war in the 19th century. Taiwan was 'returned' back to China after WW2. This old man if I am not wrong served as a soldier in the Japanese Army during WW2......I bet he still think he is 'Japanese'

Taiwan Set for `Outstanding' Share Gains Amid Momentum: Technical Analysis

Taiwan’s stock index is poised to rally a further 10 percent based on momentum indicators and Fibonacci ratios, according to Auerbach Grayson & Co.

The surge in the Taiex Index relative strength index past 70 on Dec. 6 is “a sign of strength” that confirms a “bull trend” when coupled with other technical tools, not a signal to sell as suggested by “conventional wisdom,” said Richard Ross, global technical strategist at Auerbach Grayson in New York. The index’s jump to a two-year high capped a 76.4 percent retracement on the Fibonacci chart, he said.

“Taiwan is in an outstanding technical position,” Ross said in an e-mailed response to questions. “We love the breakout to a fresh multiyear high. This should set the stage for a test of our initial upside target around 9,600.”

The Taiex rose 0.6 percent to 8,753.84 yesterday, the highest since May 2008. The measure has gained eight out of the past nine days on the prospect closer trade ties with China will allow technology companies to boost sales.

Morgan Stanley and Citigroup Inc. this month forecast the index will reach 10,000 in 2011, while Nomura Holdings Inc. turned “bullish,” predicting the equities will be among the year’s best performers.

‘Underweight’ China

“Taiwan is entering a super-cycle as a beneficiary of the peace dividend,” Morgan Stanley analysts led by Frank A.Y. Wang, wrote in a report Dec. 3. With closer ties across the strait, the brokerage said tourism is a “big opportunity” for Taiwan, as more Chinese visitors will increase political stability and cross-strait opportunities.

Taiwan Raises Interest Rates

(RTTNews) - Taiwan's central bank on Thursday raised its benchmark interest rates for the third time this year, citing an expected spike in inflation and continuing asset price rises.

The Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) hiked the discount rate to 1.625% from 1.500%. The decision was in line with economists' expectations.

The central bank also raised the secured loans rate to 2.000% from 1.875% and the unsecured loans rate to 3.875% from 3.750%. New rates are effective from December 31.

Taiwan's inflation rose to 1.53% in November from 0.56% in October, reflecting higher food prices. The Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics expects the country's consumer price inflation to be at 0.98% this year and 1.85% next year.

Since July, the central bank sought banks' efforts to curb real estate speculation. Banks were also urged to apply prudent loan terms to large-scale financing for high-priced land purchases and to perform diligent evaluation and property appraisals on land development projects and collaterals.

Taiwan's economic growth slowed in the third quarter and further moderation is expected for the final three months of the year. Gross domestic product rose 9.8% year-on-year during July to September. Growth eased from 12.86% recorded in the second quarter.

In November, the statistical agency said it expects GDP to grow 9.98% this year and 4.51% next year.

Wednesday, Taiwan's central bank said it is investigating activity in the foreign exchange market after noticing "unusual" trading activity over the past few days.

The island's central bank said a small number of foreign exchange banks had targeted specific times of the day to sell off large quantities of currencies.

DJ MARKET TALK: Taiwan 4Q GDP Likely +5.6% On-Year - Poll

1201 [Dow Jones] PREVIEW: Taiwan's 4Q GDP likely rose 5.60% on-year, slower than 3Q's 9.80% rise, according to the median forecast of eight economists in a Dow Jones poll; the data are due 0800 GMT Monday.

Economists say the island's economy likely continued to grow robustly in 4Q, driven by strong exports and resilient domestic investment, but the growth rate likely slowed due to a higher base of comparison.

Yuanta Securities economist Renee Yang says increasing imports of capital equipment in 4Q reflect higher private investment, which will help push up GDP; "also private consumption was boosted by Chinese tourists, and exports to emerging markets and Japan were also strong," she adds.

Taiwan Q4 GDP Growth Exceeds Forecast, Exports Surge

(RTTNews) - Bolstered by robust export sector performance, Taiwan's economy expanded in the fourth quarter of last year, but at the slowest pace since the recovery began in the final quarter of 2009, latest official data showed Monday.

Preliminary figures released by the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics showed that gross domestic product grew 6.48% year-on-year in the fourth quarter, beating the government forecast for a 4.7% rise. In the preceding quarter, GDP rose 9.8%.

In 2010, the economy recorded a robust 10.47% expansion, which was 0.49 percentage points above the government forecast. The robust expansion last year was boosted by vibrant growth in the first two quarters.
