150,000 expected in July 1 march

Hong Kong is gearing up for an annual protest march that's expected to draw three times as many people as in the past angered by Beijing's insistence on limiting residents' say in picking the city's next leader.

Organizers expect at least 150,000 people to take to the streets Tuesday to show their support for democratic reform and oppose Beijing's desire to have the final say on candidates for the chief executive's job.

It comes days after an unofficial referendum aimed at bolstering support for full universal suffrage that attracted nearly 800,000 votes.

The protest march is an annual fixture. It falls on a public holiday commemorating the return of Hong Kong to mainland China's control on July 1, 1997, after more than a century of British rule.

The likelihood that Occupy Central will be launched on the National Day, Oct. 1, grew firmer on Tuesday when a co-founder of the movement spoke of "a grand banquet" in Central while others were marking "the big day".
