Chinese Africans in HK

New data obtained by Webb-site show that Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, two small African countries, now account for 75% of the mainland Chinese who have obtained residency in HK under the Capital Entrant Investment Scheme.

The requirement for mainlanders, who account for 84% of the CIES, to obtain permanent residency somewhere else is farcical and should be scrapped.

It is part of HK's value proposition to be the Monaco of China, and we should welcome them. (15-Apr-2012)

Chinese Africans in HK
15th April 2012

At the end of our article You can call me Dr Sir last month, we remarked that The Republic of the Gambia has a special relationship with Hong Kong: although it has no consulate here, Gambia has been the largest single conduit for Chinese mainlanders seeking residency in HK via the Capital Investment Entrant Scheme (CIES).

In order to qualify for that, apart from making an investment of a certain size in certain assets, mainlanders must have permanent residence in a foreign country.

This is so that we can all pretend that mainlanders moving to HK under the scheme are coming with their money from overseas and not bypassing mainland capital controls and treating HK as the Monaco of China that it is.

Freedom of press on wane, say journos by Winnie Chong

Press freedom in Hong Kong has worsened since Donald Tsang Yam-kuen became chief executive in 2005.

That is the belief of four in every five journalists, according to a survey by the Hong Kong Journalists Association.

15 Years After Hong Kong Handover, Let the Brainwashing Begin

China’s ruling party is “progressive, selfless and united,” while “hard battle among political parties brings disaster to the people” of America.

At least, this is the reality according to a new pamphlet handed out to elementary and secondary school students in Hong Kong, the former British colony, 15 years after its handover to China.

Not a good sign. I think this used to be the former Club Volvo ..

Club BBoss, one of the internationally known night clubs in Hong Kong, will close its doors on Saturday after 28 years of operation, a victim of the economic downturn.

Cross-border flood of traders into Sheung Shui in the New Territories has inflated the price of everyday goods by up to 20 percent, as compared to other districts as traders snap up products and take them across the border, fuelling a protest by hundreds of residents outside a train station there over the weekend.

Japanese couple attacked in Hong Kong amid tensions

Hong Kong police said Wednesday they had arrested a man suspected of an attack on a Japanese couple, which prompted Tokyo to warn its 22,000 citizens in the city, to avoid going out at night.

The incident, which occurred Monday evening as the pair were taking a stroll on a busy waterfront, comes as tens of thousands of anti-Japan protestors rallied across China in recent days over a territorial row.

According to a police spokeswoman, the couple, aged 37 and 35, were repeatedly punched by a local man who has since been released on bail.

"The man attacked the couple and fled the scene," the officer told AFP.

"Police had arrested a 31-year-old Hong Kong man late Tuesday and questioned him for assault and causing actual bodily harm," she said, adding the man will be required to report back to the station later this month.

The attack prompted the Japanese consulate to issue a safety warning to its citizens, urging them to avoid moving in groups and going out at night.

"We have asked the Hong Kong authorities to ensure the safety of our citizens in Hong Kong," Miyuki Matsumoto, the Japanese public relations consul in the city, told AFP.

According to local media, the man asked the couple whether they were Japanese before he assaulted them.

It was the first case of violence reported in the semi-autonomous city following nationwide demonstrations in recent days, over disputed islands in the East China Sea known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. They are also claimed by Taiwan.

Japanese firms including Canon, Panasonic and Honda Motor had temporarily shut all or part of their operations in China due to safety concerns.

Hong Kong activists have also staged anti-Japan rallies in recent weeks but they had been largely peaceful.
