Mainland consumption still short of pre-pandemic levels

by Christine Peng

Mainland consumer sentiment has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels as wage growth rebounded by an average of 6 percent, which is still below the 2019 level, said Christine Peng, head of Greater China Consumer Sector at UBS.

Due to the recurrent waves of Covid-19, the service sector has been slow to recover and consumption may not return to pre-pandemic levels until the second half of next year, she added.

However, she believes that consumption is still the main driver of China's economy and will account for an even higher proportion of the economy in the future as China's city cluster plan could drive consumption upgrade in lower-tier cities.

China Power Crunch Is Next Economic Shock After Evergrande

The crackdown on power consumption is being driven by rising demand for electricity and surging coal and gas prices as well as strict targets from Beijing to cut emissions.

It’s coming first to the country’s mammoth manufacturing industries: from aluminum smelters to textiles producers and soybean processing plants, factories are being ordered to curb activity or -- in some instances -- shut altogether.

Almost half of China’s regions missed energy consumption targets set by Beijing and are now under pressure to curb power use. Among the most affected are Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong -- a trio of industrial powerhouses that account for nearly a third of China’s economy.

President Xi Jinping tries to ensure blue skies at the Winter Olympics in Beijing next February.

Severe shortage of coal and gas -- used to heat homes and power factories -- this winter.
