China auto sales drop by 22.4pc in first half

China’s auto sales rose 1.8 percent in June over a year earlier but fell by double digits for the first half after the country shut down to fight the coronavirus, an industry group reported today.

June sales of SUVs, sedans and minivans in the industry’s biggest global market rose to 1.8 million, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

That was down from May’s 7 percent gain following the reopening of the economy but a rebound from February’s record 81.7 percent plunge after dealerships and other businesses were shut to contain the virus outbreak.

For the six months through June, sales were off 22.4 percent from a year ago, CAAM reported.

Total vehicle sales, including trucks and buses, rose 11.6 percent in June to 2.3 million.

Demand already was weak before the outbreak due to consumer jitters over a slowing economy and trade tension with Washington. Sales fell 9.6 percent last year, the second straight annual decline.

That has hurt global automakers that are looking to China to propel sales growth.

It also squeezes cash flow at a time when global and Chinese brands are spending billions of dollars to develop electric vehicles under pressure to meet government sales quotas.

Demand for electric vehicles weakened last year after Beijing reduced subsidies that helped to make China their biggest market, accounting for half of global sales. The government said in April it will extend subsidies through 2020 to shore up sales.

June sales of gasoline-electric hybrid and pure-electric vehicles fell 33.1 percent from a year earlier to 104,000, according to CAAM. For the first half, sales were down 37.4 percent at 393,000.

Also in the first half, SUV sales declined 14.9 percent from a year ago while sedan sales were off 26 percent.

Sales by Chinese brands fell 11.6 percent in June from a year ago to 590,000 units. Their market share shrank 5 percentage points from the same time a year ago to 33.5 percent.

In July, global car sales volumes posted their best ever for that month, according to a proxy of dominant car markets (China, US and Europe).

This is particularly interesting as the automobile market had appeared to be in a multi-year decline even before the pandemic, with January being the worst for combined car sales since 2015.

In June, sales recovered to that 2015 level, so a record July is a strong signal.

Global light-vehicle sales predicted to drop by 20pc

S&P Global Ratings forecasts that global light-vehicle sales would drop by 20 percent from a year ago, as selling and productions were halted amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Light car sales have declined by 25 percent from a year ago during the first half this year, said the credit rating agency, expecting sales would recover to between 7 percent and 9 percent in the next two years.

not vested

Ark Autonomous Technology & Robotics (ARKQ)

Alphabet’s (NASDAQ:GOOG,NASDAQ:GOOGL) Waymo is already providing autonomous rides without human drivers in the Phoenix area, and General Motors’ (NYSE:GM) Cruise unit is set to do the same by the end of next month.

Meanwhile, multiple companies are using or testing self-driving vehicles or drones for deliveries or to transport passengers along fixed routes. It seems that we are almost upon the autonomous era.

And as I pointed out in a previous column, “The cloud, e-commerce, streaming, and 5G have all been more popular areas. Yet AI, with its true empowerment of computers, will change our world much more than all those other technologies. And one of the best ways to invest in AI is through robotics stocks.”

All of this makes the Ark Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF one of the top tech ETFs right now. Among its top holdings are Tesla, which is working on self-driving technology and Alphabet. Also making the cut are two of the few 3D printing stocks that have actually performed well: Materialise (NASDAQ:MTLS) and Proto Labs (NYSE: PRLB)

ARKW ETF is up about 130% from its March low.

Electric Vehicles – China
Approaching An Inflection Point

The world is approaching an inflection point of wide EV adoption.

This comes as:
a) EV cost is falling to parity with ICE car cost along with battery cost decline and
b) ICE car cost is being elevated by tightening emission regulations.

Tesla’s localising production in China provides emerging investment opportunities.

Maintain OVERWEIGHT.

Top picks: BYD, CATL and Minth.

Initiate coverage on Xusheng with BUY and target price of Rmb52.00.
