Cybersecurity officials warn of new, dangerous hack

The world should brace itself for more physically destructive hacks, two senior cybersecurity officials said Wednesday, warning that a more dangerous era of hacking was already upon us.

Paul Chichester, the director of operations at Britain’s new National Cyber Security Center, told an event hosted by British defense think tank RUSI that electronic intrusions were on their way to becoming more “destructive, disruptive and coercive.”

“That will be our future,” he told a crowd of officers, academics and industry experts gathered for a two-day symposium in central London.

Chichester was seconded by Air Force Lt. Gen. James K. McLaughlin, deputy commander at U.S. Cyber Command, who told attendees that infrastructure-wrecking attacks were being seen “right now in the environment.”

Neither official went into specifics about what they’d seen or why they felt the threat was intensifying, although McLaughlin invoked a cyberattack in Ukraine which knocked out three separate power distribution companies last year.

The Dec. 23 incident, believed to have been pulled off by a team of hackers using stolen passwords, left 225,000 people without electricity, according to a U.S. Department of Homeland Security bulletin published two months later.

Cybersecurity experts long worried that hackers can hijack the vulnerable industrial control systems to wreak havoc in power plants, traffic systems, factories, dams or reservoirs.

Still, publicly confirmed examples of real-world damage from hacking have — so far — been few and far between. The Ukrainian incident provided a rare and dramatic demonstration of the physical consequences of a well-organized cyberattack.

McLaughlin said there was now no doubt such hacks were possible.

“Three years ago these were just theoretical,” he said. “Now we see them. They’re practically here in front of us.”

Britain to spend 1.9 billion pounds on boosting cyber defenses

The 1.9 billion pound investment over the next five years represents a doubling of the funding provided for cyber defense over the 2011-2016 period.

Malware That Took Part of the Internet Offline Presents Ongoing Threat

By Joshua Philipp

An unknown group of hackers launched the attack with a new form of malware known as Mirai, which was posted on the internet on Oct. 1 for anyone to download and use.

As Epoch Times reported on Oct. 6, the malware allows just about anyone to launch attacks capable of bringing down portions of the internet.

Mirai is unique in how it pulls its strength for attacks. It infects a massive network of devices connected to the internet—such as baby monitors, security cameras, and Wi-Fi thermostats—and uses processing power from these devices to overwhelm internet servers with fake traffic, forcing them offline.

Cyberattack That Took Liberia Offline Was Likely Just a Test

By Joshua Philipp

The tool used in the attack, Mirai, is the same tool that took major websites offline on Oct. 21, including Netflix, Amazon, and Twitter, and had been released online on Oct. 1.

‘U.S. Govt. Hackers Ready to Hit Back If Russia Tries to Disrupt Election’

U.S. military hackers have penetrated Russia’s electric grid, telecommunications networks and the Kremlin’s command systems, making them vulnerable to attack by secret American cyber weapons should the U.S. deem it necessary, according to a senior intelligence official and top-secret documents reviewed by NBC News.

American officials have long said publicly that Russia, China and other nations have probed and left hidden malware on parts of U.S critical infrastructure, “preparing the battlefield,” in military parlance, for cyber attacks that could turn out the lights or turn off the internet across major cities.

Cyberwar

The first skirmishes have already started.

Russia and Estonia had a small cyberwar several years ago.

Iran’s nuclear programme was damaged by a Stuxnet attack.

Today, international conflicts are increasingly played out in cyberspace.

What we’ve not yet seen is a major cyberwar. When that comes, it will involve large-scale outages and physical destruction.

What could such a war look like? Airliners could be crashed. Dams could be opened, causing devastating floods. Power grids and communications could be shut down, potentially starving people in cities.

In the most extreme cases, we could even imagine a country’s nuclear weapons being turned against its own people. And you might never know who did it…

A Broad C5ISR Play

Another play on the headlong rush to shore up U.S. military and governmental cybersecurity is through a very unique and specific exchange-traded fund (ETF), PureFunds ISE Cyber Security ETF (NYSE Arca: HACK).

Already up 18% in the past six months, there is plenty of headroom left.

According to cybersecurity market research firm Cyber Ventures, the cybersecurity market should eclipse $1 trillion between 2017 and 2021.

And according to security firm McAffee, cybertheft is a $400 billion a year industry. Consulting firm PWC reports that there were nearly 60 million discovered attacks last year. And that only tells the story of those hacks that were discovered.

Also bear in mind, nearly 200 million new people connect to the Internet each year. As more and more people come online, the cybersecurity challenges only grow.

And now that the Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming a reality, you can expect 5.4 billion new devices – from unmanned weaponized vehicles to toasters – vulnerable to hacks.

Shamoon virus returns in new Gulf cyber attacks after four-year hiatus

By Jim Finkle and Jeremy Wagstaff

A version of Shamoon, the destructive computer virus that crippled tens of thousands of computers at Middle Eastern energy companies four years ago, was used in mid-November to attack computers in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere in the region, according to U.S. security firms.

The 2012 Shamoon attacks were likely conducted by hackers working on behalf of the Iranian government, said CrowdStrike Chief Technology Office Dmitri Alperovitch. It is too early to say whether the same group was behind Shamoon 2, he said.
