Trump’s Cybercrisis

By Sean Brodrick

The Department of Defense is spending $5.49 billion on cyber defense in 2017, down slightly from the $5.5 billion it spent last year.

About $19 billion will be spent across the federal government this year, up from $14 billion in 2016.

Trump named Thomas Bossert as his deputy for domestic and transnational security priorities.

He is there specifically to focus on cybersecurity.

China has done plenty. Its cyber heists include stealing the plans for America’s newest fighter, the F-35. Chinese hackers also stole the personal information of 20 million government employees.

The damage from cybercrimes is projected to double from $3 trillion annually in 2015 to $6 trillion by 2021.

The global cybersecurity business is estimated to be worth $49 billion in 2017.

That spending is projected to exceed $1 trillion over the next five years!

Cybersecurity Trends in 2016: Ransomware Way Up, Point-of-Sale Attacks Way Down

By Paul Ausick

SonicWall detected an increase from 3.2 million ransomware attack attempts in 2014 and 3.8 million in 2015 to an astounding 638 million in 2016.

By the end of the first quarter, $209 million in ransom had been paid by companies, and by mid‐2016, almost half of organizations reported being targeted by a ransomware attack in the prior 12 months.

Cybersecurity Growth

I think you want to buy companies that are involved in cybersecurity technology if for no other reason than the public is finally beginning to catch on thanks to things like the Yahoo! Inc. (NasdaqGS:YHOO) data breach last December which compromised 1 billion user accounts, and the more recent CIA WikiLeaks Vault 7 debacle.

Here’s some data that will get your attention like it does mine:
1. Cybercrime will cost consumers a staggering $2 trillion a year by 2019, according to Juniper Research.
2. 77% of organizations have no capability to respond to critical incidents, according to NTT Com Security’s 2016 NTT Global Threat Intelligence Report. And;
3. It takes the average target 200 days to detect a breach, during which there can be billions of dollars in damage done.
