Internet – China
3Q22 Game Market Remains Weak After Lockdowns

We expect China’s 3Q22 game revenue performance to be weak or below the street’s
estimates, an 11% further drop in September’s grossing.

The games being approved in Sep 22 are mainly from smaller players, while Tencent has yet to receive a new game approval since Jul 21, which has become a laggard to the company.

We remain cautiously optimistic at this juncture pending the resumption of near-term sentiment.

Maintain MARKET WEIGHT.

G Sachs: CN Game Industry Hails Multiple Positives, Recommends Tencent/ NetEase/ XD

Multiple positive factors including:-
1. Increased revenue due to a relaxed regulatory environment
2. Continued margin expansion as game publishers reduce channel costs and
3. Emerging AIGC themes that will transform the entire game value chain by reducing R&D costs or speeding up the development of new games.

As of May, the total revenue contribution from these new games accounted for 15% of China's mobile game revenue.

Investors are concerned whether the accelerated release of new games will put competitive pressure on legacy games, given the stagnant total game population and the limited time spent by users during the re-opening period.

The videogame business is enormous

According to a report by SuperData Research, the global gaming market was valued at $159.3 billion in 2020. This includes revenue from console games, PC games, mobile games, and esports.

To put that in perspective, the music industry was valued at $19.1 billion in 2020, while the movie industry was valued at $41.7 billion.

That means the gaming industry is making more than three times as much money as the music industry and almost four times as much as the movie industry.

China is softening stance on gaming after US$80 billion rout

China approved 105 domestic games on Monday, the latest indication that Beijing is softening its stance after its move to tighten industry restrictions led to a US$80 billion rout last week.

The titles included those operated by Tencent Holdings and NetEase Inc, China’s two leading game publishers that have been pummeled by Beijing’s new rules.

Additional restrictions include a ban on rewards for frequent log-ins and forced player-duels, and even a prohibition on content that violates national security.

Several analysts including those from Citi also said shortly after the new restrictions came out that Tencent and NetEase should not be significantly affected, but that did not prevent the shares of both companies from tumbling in US trading.
