At 170 million users, this is still the ‘early growth stage’ for China’s online gaming market

China has emerged as the world’s single largest market for e-sports, drawing 170 million players and viewers last year.

Last year professional e-sport teams in China competed for US$42 million in prize money, or about 45 per cent of the US$93 million prize pool globally.

E-sports events will be included in the upcoming Asian Games, due to be held in Hangzhou in 2022, and an eventual spot in the Olympics has been muted.

The industry is on track to reach 74 billion yuan (US$11.2 billion) in 2019, up from 3.6 billion yuan in 2016.

Overseas revenue for China’s online games increased 36.2 per cent to US$7.2 billion in 2016.

China first half gaming revenue at 105b yuan, report says

China’s game market is booming. A new report says that the market generated about 105 billion yuan (US$15 billion) in revenues in the first half, a 5.2 percent increase.

The semi-annual game industry report from data company JoyNews Corporation and the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association also noted that the old-fashioned game market has already become saturated, XInhua reports.

That explains why companies are spending more on developing new technologies and market segments, such as E-sports and games that target female players.

According to the report, E-sports revenues jumped by about 16 percent in the first half of the year to top 41 billion yuan.

"For any game developers, if you want to be competitive, you'd have to improve and upgrade the technology. Then there's innovation. And only with innovation can we offer better designs or more new games to our users,” said Liu Huicheng, president of Ourpalm, one of China's leading web and mobile game developer.

China regulators plan to restrict number and usage of new games, amid concerns over child health

China’s regulators said they plan to limit the number of new online games and the total number of games, while taking steps to restrict the amount of time minors spend playing them.

President Xi Jinping has publicly spoken about the need to help children’s eyesight. Myopia among students is more common and is affecting children at younger ages, Xi said.
