PwC: China's Video Game Revenue CAGR at 7.4%

The global video game industry saw total revenue of US$71.27 billion in 2015, which is forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8%, to reach US$90.07 billion in 2020, according to PwC's Global Entertainment and Media Outlook 2016-2020.

China is the world's third largest video game market by revenue, following the US, the largest market, and Japan, the second largest.

In 2015, China's gaming revenue was US$8.98 billion, and is expected to rise to US$12.85 billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 7.4%.

The growth has been supported by an escalation in the number of gamers, rising to 534 million in 2015, an increase of 3.3% from 2014.

HK: Potential seen for eSports in the SAR

by Janice Huang

Hong Kong has bright potential to develop eSports, with its strategic location between mainland China and Asia, as well as its language and ease of access to the mainland - the world's largest gaming market worth US$24.6 billion (HK$191.88 billion) in 2016, PricewaterhouseCoopers said in a report that it released yesterday.

It said eSports has developed quickly in recent years.

It noted that Hong Kong has a mobile penetration rate of 84.6 percent and broadband access in the city is tipped to reach 117.9 percent by 2021. These positive factors will boost growth of eSports in the city, PricewaterhouseCoopers said.

It predicted that by 2021, gaming revenues will grow at a compound annual pace of 6.6 percent to US$1 billion.

It also forecast the value of Asia's eSports market to reach US$35 billion by 2021.

It added that the proposed new board in Hong Kong's stock market aims to lure hi-tech firms to list in the city.

E-Sports

The South China Morning Post has an interesting story on the rise of e-Sports in China and the big crowds drawn to watching teams compete in games like League of Legends:

China’s growing e-sports industry – where professional gamers compete against other teams as spectators watch – has seen the number of professional players grow from a mere 50 in 2006, to 1,001 in 2016, according to data from Unibet.

Almost all of EDG’s eight members are below the age of 25. According to Esportsearnings.com, a site that tracks prize money, e-sports players aged between 19 and 24 tend to win the most prize money, while winnings tend to drop off significantly for those over-25.

EDG’s youngest player Tian “Meiko” Ye just turned 19 this year, and is the group’s youngest member. His parents were initially resistant towards his choice to become an e-sports professional.

“After they’ve seen what EDG has achieved, they’re much more supportive now of my profession in e-sports,” Tian said.

The phenomenal rise of e-sports in China where gamers outnumber the US population

Chinese fans are investing substantial time and money not just to play, but also to support their idols

China makes up 57 per cent of the global e-sports audience – with about 3.5 billion hours of e-sports videos viewed and 11.1 billion e-sports streams delivered to the country last year, according to an IHS Markit research report.

The world spends US$109 billion on video games, and the Chinese are the biggest players

The most popular mobile game in China’s mobile gaming market, Tencent’s Honour of Kings, boasts an impressive 200 million players, half of whom are females under the age of 24.

China’s huge pool of gamers are also willing to pay. The average Chinese gamer spends about US$143 a year on games, according to data from Newzoo.

The sheer number of Chinese gamers and their gaming expenditure has turned China into the world’s top gaming market, with a market size of US$24.4 billion.

China’s mobile gaming market is expected to rake in more than US$15 billion in revenue this year, growing 25 per cent from last year’s US$12 billion, according to an IDC forecast.
