No New Game Approvals Granted in PRC This Yr: Report

Originally, Chinese gaming firms had expected the freeze on new video game approvals will resume as soon as October.

Yet, Financial Times quoted sources that the freeze will probably last until next year, meaning no new game titles will be approved within 2018.

Analysts worried that child health concerns will lead to further tightening gaming policy in China.

China gaming approval ‘green channel’ halted after one Communist Party official’s promotion

Zhuang Rongwen, head of State Administration of Press and Publication, was named to lead the Cyberspace Administration of China

Zhuang’s departure coincided with the halt in gaming approval via a ‘green channel’ first revealed by Tencent

The halt on new game approvals is expected to extend to as late as February, pending the finalisation of the new licensing system.

Against this backdrop, Chinese game developers have ramped up efforts to publish their new titles overseas, while some independent labels have sought to reach domestic audience via US games distribution platform Steam, which has an estimated 30 million users in China. While Steam has yet to officially launch in China, it is not blocked in the country either.

China says will approve more video games after checks

China is working to issue approvals for games that have passed checks, an official with the Publicity Department of the Communist Party said today.

Feng Shixin, vice director of the department's copyright bureau, called for patience as there are stacks of game applications that need to be examined, Xinhua.

Some of the games have passed examination and they will issue the approvals as quickly as possible, Feng said during the China Games Industry Annual Conference held in Hainan Province.

The official recognized online games as "a significant part of China's internet content industry and an important form of public entertainment."

The games have played an important role in boosting the country's internet economy, sparking vigor of cultural innovation and satisfying the cultural needs of the public, according to Feng.

Meanwhile, Feng noticed that problems inside China's online gaming industry include a lack of originality, cultures, and social responsibilities, as well as a misdirection of values.

Game approvals exclude Tencent

by Gary Poon

China's publishing regulator approved the release of the third batch of video games after a freeze for most of last year, with Tencent (0700) still absent from the list of new titles.

The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television approved 93 games in its third list since December, with Tencent's domestic rival NetEase also absent for the third time.

Authorities stopped approving the release of new titles from March last year amid regulatory overhaul triggered by growing concern about violent content and game addiction, particularly among young players.

Tencent's shares subsequently tumbled, wiping billions of dollars from the stock's market value. The shares are still down as much as 20 percent compared with before the freeze.

Tencent dropped 1.24 percent to HK$335.8 yesterday.Though the approval process is thawing, analysts said new releases would still be gradual as the regulator had a backlog of thousands of games.

Including Tuesday's batch, the regulator has approved 257 games since December when it resumed processing applications after an almost year-long hiatus. Before the freeze, in January alone last year, the regulator approved 716 titles.

With two weeks separating the latest batch from the previous batch on January 9, "Tencent and NetEase will likely have to wait until after the Lunar New Year holiday" running February 4 to 10, said a NetEase executive.
