<Research Report>CICC Recommends Buying Chinese Airlines; Top Pick CHINA SOUTH AIR

CICC, in its report, commented that the valuation of Chinese airlines are now bottoming while the correlation of oil prices and share performance has been distorted significantly.

Should renminbi depreciates by 5% next year, their results can still grow by 30%.

Furthermore, as the Chinese New Year is approaching, there will be a great chance of seeing an increase in both the volume and turnover.

The broker recommended buying Chinese airlines. CHINA SOUTH AIR (01055.HK) was the top pick, with a rating of "Recommend". The target prices of its A/H-shares were RMB12.5/HK$8 respectively.

Meanwhile, CICC rated AIR CHINA (00753.HK) and TRAVELSKY TECH (00696.HK) at Recommend, with a target price of HK$9 and HK$17.

not vested

Valuation of the three airlines in China are reasonable.

CICC's top pick is China Southern Airlines (1055) although share prices of China Eastern Airlines (0670) and Air China (0753) are highly correlated.

All three are good to accumulate at current low levels.

<Research Report>BofAML Maintains 3 Largest Chinese Airlines at Underperform

Bank of America Merrill Lynch maintained China's three largest aviation stocks at Underperform, mainly attributable to large currency translation losses as a result of RMB depreciation, which is expected to weaken to 6.9 vs USD this year.

While sluggish Chinese economy is a risk to demand, aggressive capacity expansion could also intensify downward pressure on yields.

The research house said that CHINA SOUTH AIR (01055.HK) has most downside, as it is most susceptible to RMB devaluation. The company is expected to record a net loss of RMB1 billion this year.

In comparison, RMB depreciation will pose less impacts on AIR CHINA (00753.HK) and CHINA EAST AIR (00670.HK).

Bank of America Merrill Lynch's 2016 earnings forecast is 90% lower than that of market consensus.

5 Airline Stocks Set to Take Off in 2016

A 'golden age' for the industry signals buying opportunities

The Bottom Line on Airline Stocks

Many years from now, investors will look back at this point in time and might call this the golden era of airlines.

As fuel costs continue to decline, and with efficiency improvements cutting total volume used, airlines will now have the flexibility to introduce new routes, acquire a bigger fleet, and return these overall savings to their shareholders through increased value and dividends.

Regional Aviation – A Snapshot

Synopsis

With crude oil prices falling more than 65% since mid-2014 and reaching 11-year lows, we believe there is value emerging in regional airlines – especially SIA, Air China and China Eastern Airlines.

In addition, aviation support services could also offer good investment opportunities, as well as dividends backed by strong cash flow.
