<Research Report>G Sachs: CN Cellphone Brands, Supply Chain Subject to Downside Risks

Goldman Sachs opined that Chinese cellphone supply chains will suffer downside risks in Greater China should relevant US restrictions tighten further, owing to their reliance on US smartphone parts and components (e.g. CPUs from Qualcomm).

Seeing major growth in overseas markets, Chinese smartphone makers will face downside export risks if they lose access to Google's operating system, the broker added.

Huawei and XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) were expected further price hike room.

Brief Discussion about 5G Stocks; China May Issue 5G Commercial Licences Shortly

Stanley Chik, a research head at Bright Smart, said 5G-related stocks skyrocketed on Monday (3 June) as Mainland sources said 5G commercial licences will soon be issued.

For this, Chik said he felt no surprise and that 5G will continue to serve as a theme with hot speculation in future.

Yet, pre-mature optimism is not advised for investors. Chik explained that 5G application is very limited, despite higher speed, as it is still at early stage of development.

Secondly, 5G services are limited due to limited base stations, while prices of 5G handsets are not cheap.

Thirdly, adhering to "Quicker and Cheaper Internet Connection", China will not allow 5G charges to be higher than 4G, which may exert pressure on operators in price hike and affect their profitability.

As such, the impact on the three major 5G operators will be relatively negative.

CHINA TOWER (00788.HK) saw variables in adjusting base station leasing fee in future; whereas Huawei and ZTE (00763.HK) will benefit more as they provide 5G infrastructure.

Nevertheless, Chik highlighted business potentials of 5G. Majority monthly charges of 5G are expected to be under "Limitless Plan" when 5G is ten times faster than 4G.

One of the way for operators to explore new income sources is to introduce variety of applications for 5G and charge users of the access fee.

Given 5G development may lead to "Internet of Everything", the related income may be worth anticipating.

<Research Report>CICC: CN May Start 5G Commercial Use by Oct; Buy on CHINA TOWER, CHINACOMSERVICE

CICC in its report cited Xinhua News Agency that MIIT will soon issue 5G commercial use licenses, signaling the era of 5G commercial use in China.

While the country has the commercial fundamentals in 5G mid-band spectrum (i.e. 2.6Ghz and 3.5Ghz), 5G commercial use may kick in by 1 October.

At the beginning stage of 5G cycle, infrastructure service providers will outperform telecom carriers.

CICC rated Buy on CHINA TOWER (00788.HK) and CHINACOMSERVICE (00552.HK) at respective target prices $2.5 and $8.2.

MARCH 15, 2018

What is 5G and who are the major players?

by Eric Auchard, Stephen Nellis

By 2025, 1.2 billion people are set to have access to 5G networks - a third of them in China.

Before the new technology becomes a reality for consumers, two transitions need to take place.

Mobile operators have to upgrade their networks with 5G gear made by the likes of Huawei [HWT.UL] and ZTE 0000630.SZ of China, Sweden’s Ericsson (ERICb.ST) and Finland’s Nokia (NOKIA.HE). And phone makers need to make handsets with built-in 5G radios ready to hook up to networks.

Qualcomm (QCOM.O) is the dominant player in smartphone communications chips, making half of all core baseband radio chips in smartphones.

Qualcomm has landed a number of these foundational patents, which means that both handset makers and telecommunications gear makers will have to pay it licensing fees. It dominated standards setting in 3G and 4G wireless and looks set to top the list of patent holders heading into the 5G cycle.

Intel is going to be bailed out. And their saving grace is a tech king.

As reported by Yahoo Finance on Wednesday, Apple will be buying out Intel's 5G smartphone modem business for a price of $1 billion.

It was recently revealed that Intel was drowning, losing $1 billion annually on its modem operations .

And it looks like Apple has been ready to pounce and take advantage for some time.

The market powerhouse has been eyeing the assets, and it makes complete sense considering they also recently hired Intel's 5G chief, Messay Amerga, and Umashankar Thyagarajan, a project engineer and senior director on the same 5G team.

What does this mean for Apple?

Well, they will now be in excellent position to start producing their own 5G modems for iPhones, instead of continuing to rely on Qualcomm for it's hardware.

And his will not only create incredible benefits for Apple, but for the 5G market boom as a whole.

5G could quite possibly become the greatest wealth creator in American history.

When a tech titan like Apple wants to get their hands on something, you know it's going to be huge... and insanely profitable.

It's not just about changing how smartphones operate. It's going to transform everything- cars, computers, streets, homes, schools, banks... there are endless possibilities.

Essentially, it's going to change the world.

Phone shipments decline 2.3pc

Worldwide smartphones shipments declined 2.3 percent year-on-year in the second quarter with Apple shipments plunging 18 percent, according to the International Data Corporation's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

Vendors shipped 333.2 million phones in the second quarter, an increase of 6.5 percent over the previous quarter.

China and the United States experienced the sharpest quarterly declines. However, the declines in China during the first half of 2019 have been less severe than the second half of 2018, suggesting some recovery is under way.

Huawei's shipment volumes in China hit an all-time high and accounted for 62 percent of its 2Q19 total with 36.4 million units.

Long-term winners in the 5G sector will be 5G gear makers like Nokia (NOK), 5G infrastructure providers like Crown Castle (CCI), and specialized chipmakers like Skyworks Solutions (SWKS).
