What to do if your smartphone gets stolen

Quickly call your mobile operator to get your line blocked before the thief has the time to use it.

If you know your phone's IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity number), you can also get the handset blocked.

The IMEI number is a unique identification number for each handset. It's wise to make a note of this number when you buy a new phone.

You can get it by typing "*#06#" on your phone keypad. A 15-figure code is then displayed – write it down and keep it somewhere safe.

Passwords should be changed quickly as a security precaution.

Citigroup, in its report, maintained its Neutral stance on smartphone industry.

Despite unexciting Mainland demand, the yearly average price growth is likely to nullify negative factors which provides selective investment opportunities.

The research house trimmed 2017-2019 projected global smartphone shipment by 1.7%, 1.7% and 2.3%.

The broker is upbeat on the outlook of high-end producers and rated Buy for Apple Inc., ASM PACIFIC (00522.HK), AAC TECH (02018.HK) and SUNNY OPTICAL (02382.HK).

China’s cutthroat smartphone market is coming down to a handful of major brands

Slowing demand is threatening Chinese smartphone companies like Gionee, Coolpad and LeEco, all of which mainly rely on domestic sales.

Smartphone sales in China are dominated by the top five brands – Huawei Technologies, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Apple – with a 77 per cent share of the market, up from 67 per cent in 2016.

Data from IDC showed that smartphone shipments on the mainland decreased 4.9 per cent to 444.3 million units last year.

“The top-20 smartphone brands control 93 per cent of the market,” said Counterpart research director Neil Shah. “That means 180 other brands are competing for just the remaining seven per cent share".

<Research Report>Daiwa: Mainland Scraps Data Roaming; CHINA MOBILE, CHINA UNICOM Relatively More Vulnerable

The Chinese government required telecommunication companies to reduce mobile data charges by 30% and to eliminate data roaming charges.

Daiwa said in the research report that it believed CHINA MOBILE (00941.HK) and CHINA UNICOM (00762.HK) are relatively more vulnerable than CHINA TELECOM (00728.HK), as China Mobile has more dominant presence in the rural areas, while China Unicom has been promoting cheap & unlimited data packages in select regions.

Daiwa reiterated a positive view on the mainland's telecom industry and assigned the Buy rating on the three giant telecos.
