Huawei dislodges Apple from smartphone perch

China's Huawei Technologies overtook Apple Inc to become the world's second-biggest smartphone seller in the June quarter, data from market research firms showed, as it gained ground in Europe and expanded its lead back home, Reuters reports.

"Huawei is shifting to more value-added models, by launching new flagship smartphones with the latest features. Huawei's P20 Pro is the first flagship smartphone model to be equipped with triple cameras, beating competitors to market," IHS Markit analyst Gerrit Schneemann said in a note.

Huawei on Tuesday said overall it had raked in 15 percent higher revenue in the first six months of 2018, steady at levels seen a year ago.

According to IHS and Strategy Analytics, Huawei grabbed more than 15 percent of the global smartphone market over April-June, overtaking Apple's roughly 12 percent and just behind Samsung Electronics Co's nearly 20 percent share.

Data from Canalys, which estimates industrywide smartphone shipments in China topped 100 million in the second quarter from 91 million in the first, shows Huawei grew its share of the home market by 6 percentage points on year to a record 27 percent.

5G Internet Connectivity

The next decade will be built on connectivity.

The majority of the technological advancements we're going to enjoy (artificial intelligence, self-driving cars, the Internet of Things) will require lightning-fast, consistent internet connections.

5G is the dynamic wireless infrastructure that's going to make this possible.

Once red-hot smartphone market sees cooler trend

The latest data suggests the days of red-hot smartphone growth are over and that sluggish growth or contraction is likely in many saturated markets. — AFP Relaxnews

Fresh surveys show global sales had their worst contraction ever in 2018, and the outlook for 2019 isn't much better.

"There is always the possibility to go to wearables or head-mounted displays, but none of those have emerged as a real threat."

Worldwide handset volumes declined 4.1% in 2018 to a total of 1.4 billion units shipped for the full year, according to research firm IDC, which sees a potential for further declines this year.

"Foldable phones would represent a really nice disruptive feature," he said.

He added that some consumers are holding off on replacing their devices amid price hikes for premium devices like Apple's iPhone.

During a recent earnings call, Apple chief executive Tim Cook agreed that people were holding onto their iPhones longer.

Cook contended that another reason for slower iPhone sales was that telecom carriers were cutting subsidies of handsets tied to service contracts, meaning customers were faced with paying full price of US$1,000 (RM4,093) or more for high-end models.

In an unusual move, Apple lowered prices in some emerging markets to offset the effects of a strong US dollar on local pocketbooks.

"Outside of a handful of high-growth markets like India, Indonesia, (South) Korea and Vietnam, we did not see a lot of positive activity in 2018."

The Chinese market, which accounts for roughly 30% of smartphone sales, was especially hard hit with a 10% drop, according to IDC's survey.

However, Chinese smartphone makers such as Huawei, Oppo, and Xiaomi defied the trend and ended the year with gains, according to Counterpoint Research.

This year, smartphone makers will likely entice customers to upgrade devices with innovations such as superfast 5G network connectivity and foldable screens, according to Counterpoint associate director Tarun Pathak.
