Nomura Revises Up China Smartphone Shipment Forecasts

By Isabella Zhong

How many handsets did China’s smartphone makers sell this year?

Nomura analyst Joel Ying reckons 457 million units – which implies 10% growth compared to 2015 – after revising his estimate from a previous 445 million units.

Ying also sees a stronger 2016 for China’s top 10 smartphone makers, which include Huawei, Xiaomi, Lenovo (992.HK) and ZTE (763.HK), and healthy growth for shipments in 2017:

We now expect the China market to grow 10% y-y in 2016F and a further 3% y-y in 2017F thanks to:
1) continued 4G migration; and
2) relatively stable subsidy and marketing amounts from operators.

We see Chinese brands continuing to grow by 24% y-y in both 2016F and 2017F, thanks to their global expansion strategy.

Ying notes the global market share of Chinese smartphone vendors expanded to 34% in the September quarter from 27% a year ago:

We highlight that Huawei performed well (share in Europe up from 6.1% to 11.2%, and in Latin America from 5.0% to 6.8%) while Oppo and Vivo also increased their presence in APAC, with their market shares reaching No. 4/No. 8 at 4.7%/2.9% during 3Q16.

We expect the top-10 Chinese brands to see further expansion in overseas markets in 2017F with 39% y-y growth.

Stronger shipments for Chinese smartphone makers is good news for their component suppliers. Ying reiterated his buy ratings on Sunny Optical (2382.HK), Luxshare (002475.CN) and Shenzhen O-Film (002456.CN).

China’s vast mobile market now led by 4G subscribers

Fast adoption of 4G two years since its launch on the mainland augurs well for swift transition to 5G, says Bernstein analyst

Nearly 60 per cent of all mobile subscribers in mainland China are now on 4G networks, just two years after the high-speed wireless broadband service was launched in the country

Total 4G subscribers of China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom reached 789.5 million as of January 31

China Mobile, the world’s biggest wireless network operator, had 552.2 million 4G subscribers at the end of January, which put it on pace to hit 753 million 4G users by the end of this year

“We assume 2G networks in China to be closed by 2020 and 3G likely before 2025,” said Lane, adding that 4G networks would remain operational for 15 more years.

How to stop paying data roaming charges when you’re travelling

The embedded SIM, out soon, will finally allow travellers do all they want on a phone or tablet without worrying about their bills. In the meantime, carry a dual-SIM smartphone or special handset, or buy a virtual ‘global SIM’

One of the cheapest ways for international travellers to reduce the cost of calls and data (which is what most of us are really after) is to buy a local SIM card.

Visitors to Europe should know that data roaming charges within the EU will be scrapped in June 2017, so any local SIM card will work across the European Union (including the UK until it leaves the EU in two years’ time).

It gets more complex, too; to roam in Japan and Korea only phones that support 3G-UMTS work, while for the USA, a triband phone (which operates on three broadband frequencies) is required.

HK's Tink Labs Handy T1 smartphone, gives guests free web access anywhere within the city they’re staying in, as well as free national and international calls.

Handy lets users log in to and interact with social media apps while they’re in that city (it blanks once you check out), provides a constantly refreshed city guide, and can be used to order from hotel room service.

Handy is only a help if you happen to be staying in top-end hotels.

If you’re a frequent traveller, the easiest way to avoid all international roaming charges is to use a SIM at home that lets you use your allowance abroad.

A classic travel hack for business travellers in recent years has been to buy a global “travel SIM” from the likes of Truphone, GigSky, WorldSIM and AlwaysOnline Wireless, which create a virtual global mobile network and let users access low rates in an umbrella of countries, using either prepaid or pay-as-you-go plans.

The embedded SIM – or eSIM – promises global access without the need to change SIM cards, and it could be coming to your next smartphone.

It will allow you to choose, and activate, any mobile data deal you want from inside an app or browser on your phone or tablet. The eSIM is due to go mainstream during 2018, but is already being installed in some devices.

Roaming fees at end of line

by Janice Huang

State-owned China Telecom (0728) aims to scrap roaming fees by October 1 at the latest.
That was among plans outlined by chairman and chief executive Yang Jie at its annual meeting.

He also said the company attracted six million new mobile subscribers in the first quarter and sees twice as many more by year's end.

Yang admitted rival China Mobile (0941) has been performing impressively, and he does not think the balance will change in the short term.

But he sees positive signs for China Telecom, not least by net profit rising 4.5 percent in the first quarter due to growth in 4G users and mobile service revenues.

He sees solid returns from investments in 4G and fiber optic infrastructure, which could lead to bigger dividends.

China is building the planet’s largest 5G phone network for US$180b, four times more than Japan

China’s spending on 5G technology will be nearly four times larger than the nearest competitor Japan over the same seven-year period.

China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile network operator, announced plans in March to start building trial 5G networks in major mainland cities from next year and launch full commercial services in 2020.

Jefferies predicts that the mainland will have 588.3 million 5G subscribers by 2022, about 39.9 per cent of total mobile users nationwide in that year.

Mainland telcos tumble on downgrades

by Carrie Chen

China Unicom (0762) and China Mobile (0941) slumped yesterday after a significant downgrade by Morgan Stanley, while China Telecom's share price also came under pressure.

China Unicom tumbled 4.09 percent to HK$10.80, while China Mobile fell 1.28 percent to HK$81.10. China Telecom (0728) dipped 0.54 percent to HK$3.66.

Morgan Stanley downgraded China Mobile and China Unicom to underweight and cited their shares as the "least preferred stocks among Asia telcos."

The US institution also slashed its target price on China Mobile by 30 percent from HK$100 to HK$70 and China Unicom's by 20 percent from HK$12.50 to HK$10.

It downgraded China Unicom as it cited its "slower-than-expected earnings turnaround due to poor data monetization, the unlimited data price war and higher tower lease fees."

That Unicom missed its 2017 second quarter earnings target may be a near-term negative catalyst.

"A potential reversal in network [including tower] costs will likely put pressure on margins, driving a significant slowdown in the earnings turnaround," Morgan Stanley said.

It projected Unicom's earning per share for 2017 and 2018 to come in at 36 percent and 24 percent, respectively, below consensus.

Morgan Stanley also said the mixed ownership reform on the mainland without the 700 megahertz spectrum is also a major disappointment which "would suggest China Unicom will continue to lag China Telecom on mobile share gains given its spectrum disadvantage."

With the approach of 5G service, "the window of opportunity for China Unicom to narrow its operation gap versus China Mobile is coming to an end," Morgan Stanley said.

The internal return on 5G service is projected at 5 percent, much less than the 13 percent return in 4G business.

Morgan Stanley projected China Unicom's "total capital expenditure to increase from 48 billion yuan (HK$55.1 billion) in 2018 to around 100 billion yuan in 2023, driven by 5G investment, staying largely stable after that.

But due to slow adoption of 5G services, revenue from 5G is expected to reach 500 million yuan in 2020 and increase to 28 billion yuan in 2023 - 13.5 percent of mobile service revenue, and later to 122 billion yuan in 2027 - 46.8 percent of mobile service revenue.

The three major telecom operators are launching a pilot 5G technology project in several cities in the second half this year, mainland media reported yesterday.

These cities reportedly include Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Suzhou and Ningbo.

All three telecom operators will test 5G technology, build base stations and test applications of autonomous driving.

Global sales of smartphones reached 380 million units in the first quarter, led by Samsung Electronics, Apple, Huawei, Oppo and Vivo, according to research firm Gartner.

Counterpoint Technology research director Neil Shah recently estimated that Huawei, Oppo and Vivo accounted for 57.4 million units of the total 105.6 million smartphones shipped on the mainland in the first quarter.
