The worst that can happen to a company is to run out of money and be forced into bankruptcy. Enormous success is perhaps the next worst.

Online celebrity boom to sustain China’s mobile internet sector as smartphone sales falter

Users’ engagement time with their handsets is increasing as the era of the social media star takes off

Sales of smartphones in China may peak in 2016, but the amount of time users spend glued to their handset screens is getting longer.

Digital Music Revenue in Asia-Pacific

The McKinsey study estimated that the region clocked up US$900 million in total digital music revenue last year, compared with US$3.3 billion in the United States.

3G & 4G Penetration in Asia-Pacific

Data from the GSMA, an industry association representing nearly 800 mobile network operators around the world, showed that 3G and 4G networks would account for 70 per cent of total mobile connections in the Asia-Pacific by 2020, up from 45 per cent last year.

It forecast the number of smartphone connections in the region to reach 3 billion by 2020, compared with 1.7 billion at the end of December.

<Research Report>BofAML: Large Potential for IoT in PRC; Prefers CHINA UNICOM, CHINA TELECOM

Bank of America Merrill Lynch, in its report, said the biggest potential for PRC telecoms lies in Internet of Things (IoT).

Ministry of Industry & Information Technology (MIIT) estimates China's IoT market will grow 15% CAGR to RMB1.5 trillion in 2020. Of which, RMB150 billion is the revenue opportunity in connectivity market alone.

The broker expected IoT revenue to grow tremendously due to growth in connections and supportive government policies. Telecoms are now actively exploring partnership with vendors in IoT value chain to offer a complete solution.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch preferred CHINA UNICOM (00762.HK) and CHINA TELECOM (00728.HK), both at Buy, with target prices of $12.1 and $4.8 respectively, as both companies are more leveraged to emerging business growth and have attractive valuations.

China Telecom has the potential for dividend increase, and China Unicom's participation in mixed-ownership reform could lead stocks to re-rate.

As for CHINA MOBILE (00941.HK), the broker's rating is at Buy with target price of $105.

China

Yesterday, we saw China Unicom (0762) jumping 7 percent to HK$9.42, one-month high. Credit Suisse and Bank of America Merrill Lynch have a "BUY" rating on the stock.

Credit Suisse likes China Telecom (728) one of the nation's top three telcos along with Unicom and China Mobile (0941).

BoAML prefers Unicom. It said the biggest potential for mainland telecom operators are IoT (The Internet of Things). BoAML's target price for China Unicom is set at HK$12.1.

IoT is a computing concept that describes a future where one day every physical objects will be connected to the internet and be able to identify themselves to other devices.

It will involve many parties and enterprises and has been talked for years. But, I don't think it can justify us chasing mainland telecom shares at their current prices.
