EV battery giant CATL begins gauging interest for planned HK listing

06-05-2025

Contemporary Amperex Technology, the world’s largest maker of batteries for electric vehicles, has begun sounding out investor interest for its planned Hong Kong share sale, according to terms of the deal seen by Bloomberg.

Bloomberg previously reported that CATL aims to raise at least US$5 billion (HK$39 billion) as early as May, which could become the city’s biggest listing in years.

Meanwhile, CATL is seeking a loan of around US$1 billion to fund an investment in Indonesia, Bloomberg reported, citing sources.

The report said the facility could have a tenor of five to seven years, with proceeds intended to finance the company’s joint venture to build a battery cell manufacturing plant in Karawang, Indonesia.

Chinese battery maker CATL launches second generation of fast-charging battery

[quote]
Launched the second generation of its "Shenxing" fast-charging battery, which it said would power more than 67 new electric vehicle models this year.

The new generation of Shenxing can enable a driving range of 520 kilometres with a five-minute charge and the battery can reach 80 percent charging from 0 percent in 15 minutes.

CATL also launched a sodium battery product with an energy density of 175 watt-hours per kilogram.

Last month, CATL reported 15 percent growth in 2024 net profit, the slowest pace in six years, as a prolonged price war in China's electric vehicle market put pressure on the Chinese EV battery giant.

CATL in talks to buy controlling stake in Nio's power unit, sources say
MARKET

Chinese battery giant CATL is in talks to buy a controlling stake in electric vehicle maker Nio's (9866) power unit, which runs more than 3,000 battery swapping stations in China, four people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

CATL made the proposal after announcing a maximum 2.5 billion yuan (HK$2.66 billion) investment in the unit, Nio Power, in March, said the sources, who asked not to be named because the talks are not yet public.

The sources did not say how much CATL was offering under the proposed deal. However, one of them said Nio Power had been valued at more than 10 billion yuan during a 2024 fundraising round.

CATL declined to comment on the proposal when contacted by Reuters.

CATL is ramping up investments in battery swapping facilities as chairman Robin Zeng aims to reinvent his 25-year-old enterprise, pushing beyond battery manufacturing to become a green-energy provider.

The company, which aims to lead a trend it says will replace a third of gas stations in China, announced a partnership with state-owned oil company Sinopec (0386) last week to build 10,000 battery swap stations. At least 500 of them will be built this year.

China's CATL, Sinopec aim to build 10,000 battery swap stations, state media reports

Chinese electric vehicle battery giant CATL will join hands with state-owned oil giant Sinopec (0386) to build 10,000 battery swap stations, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

As part of a strategic deal signed in Beijing, the two companies will build at least 500 battery swap stations this year, according to the report, without giving the timeline for the long-term goal of 10,000 such stations.

CATL’s US$5.3 billion Hong Kong IPO defies gloom with city’s biggest stock sale since 2021

by Aileen Chuang

The top offer price was 1.5 per cent lower than Friday’s close in Shenzhen.

These 23 investors include Chinese state-owned oil company Sinopec, sovereign wealth fund the Kuwait Investment Authority and alternative-asset manager Hillhouse Investment.

Restricts sales to US onshore investors and allows non-US investors to buy securities in a cost effective manner without registering.

The proceeds from the listing will mostly go towards developing CATL’s Hungary plant.

The company has invested about €700 million (US$796 million) in Hungary for a new plant with a capacity of around 100 gigawatt hours (GWh). One GWh can supply up to 13,000 electric cars with a driving range of 500km.

CATL’s earnings rose 16 per cent in 2024 from a year earlier to 52 billion yuan, while its revenue declined 9.7 per cent to 362 billion yuan due to a reduced selling price that reflected a drop in the cost of raw materials.

CATL rose 10pc in gray market ahead of Tuesday debut

Analysts projected a 5-10 percent rise, given the huge size of its market capitalization.

Although the prospects of the stock look promising, with strong fundamentals and a high possibility of becoming a constituent of the benchmark Hang Seng Index within the year, the chance of the H-shares having a premium over the A-share is relatively low.

People do not need to rush for the IPO because the shares have been available for purchase via the Stock Connect for a long time.

Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL)

What does the company do?

CATL is the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and it is a major supplier to Tesla.

The company recently announced advances in its EV battery technology, including superfast charging of up to 520 km in 5 minutes.

Currently listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange, CATL has filed to also list in Hong Kong this year, with the deal expected to raise at least $5 billion. If completed, it would be Hong Kong’s largest IPO since early 2021.

Outlook

CATL is the only company within the index’s top five constituents to record negative returns on a year-to-date basis, largely due to geopolitical headwinds. Of the five top holdings, CATL has the largest US revenue exposure at 9.7 percent.

However, CATL is in a strong position to overcome current challenges. It continues to dominate the EV battery space, with a global market share of around 38.2 percent.

Despite a global slowdown in EV demand and falling battery prices, CATL registered a 33 per cent jump in Q1 2025 earnings.

Although market sentiment on the stock has turned negative, the company notes that the US accounts for only a small share of its shipments and that tariffs are likely to have minimal impact on its future performance.

Performance

CATL has declined 9.4 percent year to date. But the company has historically been a strong performer, with annualised returns of 26.5 percent over the past five years. At current P/B valuations of 4.0 compared to its historical P/B value of 8.6, its stock appears undervalued, suggesting attractive upside potential.

Dividends

CATL’s dividend per share has climbed from RMB 0.1 in 2020 to RMB 4.5 in 2024, representing a 3,400 percent increase over the past five years. In 2024, it paid out half of its net income as dividends.

Its current 12-month dividend yield stands at 3.7 percent though the yield is forecasted to drop to around 1.9 percent in 2025, according to Bloomberg estimates.

This is not necessarily a bad thing as the company’s lower expected dividend is likely due to its increased investments in its global expansion and higher research and development, which diverts funds from dividend payouts.
