Saudi prince now owns 5% of Twitter By Ivana Kottasova

Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal has given Twitter a big vote of confidence just months after suggesting CEO Jack Dorsey should step aside.

Alwaleed has increased its stake in Twitter over the last six weeks to 5.17%, making him the second biggest shareholder after former CEO and co-founder Evan Williams.

The announcement comes just days after Twitter (TWTR, Tech30) named Dorsey as its permanent CEO.

Alwaleed, one of the richest men in Saudi Arabia, bought a 3% stake in the company in 2011 before it went public in 2013. The current stake of 35 million shares is worth $1 billion, and includes 30 million shares owned directly by the prince and five million by his Kingdom Holding Company.

As recently as June, he was critical of Twitter management and spoke against Dorsey succeeding d**k Costolo when he stepped down as CEO. He told the Financial Times that Dorsey should focus on running his other company, Square. Twitter, he said, needed a new leader with extensive marketing experience.

Forbes ranks Alwaleed as the 34th richest person in the world. His other major investments have included Citigroup (C), as well as media companies like Time Warner (TWX) (CNN's parent company) and Disney (DIS).

Despite being one of the earliest and biggest investors in Twitter, the prince is not an avid user. He has over 3 million followers, but has tweeted just 171 times since joining the network in 2013.

Twitter

With several things going for it, and we are starting to see more analyst and investor interest in Twitter Inc. (NYSE: TWTR). Jack Dorsey was just named its permanent CEO, the company is launching its “Moments” to better capture news breaks, and the company may expand the 140 character limitation.

Even the Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal boosted his stake.

Independent research firm Argus now sees roughly 50% upside in the stock, with its $45.00 price target being almost 20% higher than the consensus analyst target.

Twitter shares were trading near $31.00 late on Friday, the highest share price since the end of July.

Tech Stocks Growing Faster Than AAPL: Twitter (TWTR)

Annualized Revenue Growth Rate: 136.3%
2015 Expected Revenue Growth: 59.3%
2016 Expected Revenue Growth: 44.4%

Last but not least, Twitter (TWTR) may never reach 400 million monthly active users, but its revenue will continue to grow as new advertising products are created.

Specifically, TWTR has thrived in monetizing mobile and in being an early adopter of video.

TWTR’s 12-month revenue of $1.78 billion is not all that impressive, but the company is expected to grow faster than the rest of the tech stocks on this list.

And considering Twitter has been battered by almost 40% during the past six months, now certainly is a “buy the dip” moment in what still could be a very high-growth stock — if new permanent CEO Jack Dorsey can turn the ship around.

7 Toxic Stocks to Avoid in Retirement: Twitter Inc (TWTR)

YTD Return: -21%

Last but not least, you don’t want Twitter (TWTR) infesting your retirement account. While co-founder, dual CEO and all-around golden boy Jack Dorsey is back calling the shots, even he may not be able to stem Twitter’s systemic issues.

Namely, TWTR doesn’t make money. Its user growth is horrendous, and getting worse.

And its revenue guidance for the fourth quarter was so bad that shares plunged more than 12% in a matter of minutes after the projections were announced in late October.

Monthly active users, a key metric for the company, barely advanced in Q3 from Q2, increasing from 316 million to 320 million.

What’s arguably more pitiful is that Twitter believes several recent, trivial changes could ignite user growth.

Twitter “Moments” debuted shortly after Dorsey was crowned permanent CEO, and seeing as the company is taking out convoluted TV spots to advertise the service, it’s betting pretty heavily that will change things.

It’s also changing star-shaped favorites to heart-shaped likes, and allowing users to create polls.

Wow. How very revolutionary.

I’m kidding. It’s desperate. Twitter stock is still a dog with fleas, and until it starts turning a regular profit and attracting a lot more users, it should remain in the doghouse.
