A "SLOW AND STEADY" WAY TO PLAY THE HOUSING RECOVERY by Jeff Clark

My colleague Steve Sjuggerud turned bullish on housing in March 2011. Since then, housing-related stocks have been on a tear.

As longtime readers know, the trend in housing is up. When housing prices rise, demand for new homes and existing home remodeling increases.

So share prices of the companies that offer these goods and services tend to follow the trend in housing. But it hasn't been a straight shot higher. These stocks are volatile – often rising and falling by double digits over just a few weeks.

As today's chart shows, there's a safer way to bet on the housing boom… Sherwin Williams (SHW) is one of the world's largest paint and coating producers.

The stock is in a "slow and steady" uptrend. Its share price has more than doubled in the last 12 months. And it just reached a new all-time high.

ANOTHER NEW HIGH FOR THIS 'PICKS AND SHOVELS' WINNER

Today's chart provides an update on one of the biggest "picks and shovels" winners in the housing rebound...

Regular readers know we're proponents of investing in picks-and-shovels companies to profit from sector and commodity booms. Picks-and-shovels providers don't bet the company on one project... They sell vital goods and services to an industry (read our educational interview about it here).

Back in April, we showed you the big uptrend in Sherwin-Williams (SHW). As we explained, Sherwin-Williams is a "picks and shovels" provider to the housing industry. Sherwin-Williams doesn't build houses or manage a portfolio of properties. Rather, it's one of America's largest paint suppliers. As more houses are built or remodeled, people buy more paint.

As you can see below, folks are buying plenty of paint. Shares of SHW are up more than 150% in the past three years. Just yesterday, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that housing starts in April jumped to their highest level since 2007.

Shares of Sherwin-Williams reached a new all-time high on the news. As the housing sector continues to recover, picks-and-shovels providers like SHW will continue to benefit.

A Dividend Aristocrat With Nearly 40 Consecutive Years of Higher Payouts

by Brian Bollinger

The company primarily serves the needs of architectural and industrial painting contractors and do-it-yourself homeowners through a network of more than 4,200 company-operated retail stores, but it also sells some industrial coatings, automotive finishes, and protective and marine coatings.

The merger between Sherwin-Williams and Valspar combines the third and fourth largest players in the industry and creates a company with more than $15 billion in sales that can better compete with PPG.

Key Risks

The biggest risk to Sherwin-Williams’ long-term future is arguably market saturation in the U.S. The company has significantly more stores than its next largest peers and enjoys a strong presence in most regions already.

SHW trades at a forward P/E ratio of 21.9, above the S&P 500’s 17.4, and has a dividend yield of 1%, which is in line with its five-year average yield.

THIS REMODELING STOCK IS BOOMING WITH HOUSING

Today's chart highlights a company that rises with the housing market...

As longtime DailyWealth readers know, Steve has been bullish on housing since the bottom of the bust. We've seen homebuilder stocks soar this year, including KB Home (KBH), PulteGroup (PHM), and NVR (NVR).

And the housing market has done especially well in recent months. Home inventories are tightening, and prices are rising as a result.

Right now, we're seeing another bullish sign – rising shares of paint company Sherwin-Williams (SHW). Founded in 1866, the company now has more than 4,000 stores throughout the U.S. Its paint brand has become a household name.

Last year, Sherwin-Williams acquired competitor Valspar for about $11.3 billion. The two companies together drew about $15.8 billion in revenue for the year.

Sherwin-Williams benefits when folks are building and remodeling their homes. And as you can see in the chart below, its stock is thriving...

Shares have increased around 40% so far this year, putting the stock at new record highs. And if the housing market keeps making strides, this trend will likely continue...

Best Stocks to Buy for the Next Decade: Sherwin-Williams (SHW)

Ulta Beauty helps women with their beauty needs; Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:SHW) does the same for houses and businesses around the world.

What’s the one thing real estate professionals suggest you should do when selling your home? Give it a fresh coat of paint. It’s the most cost-effective improvement you can make to bring in better offers.

Sherwin-Williams originally tried to buy Mexican paint company Comex in 2014, but it was beaten out by PPG Industries, Inc. (NYSE:PPG).

More than two years later, it’s in the homestretch of closing its $11.3 billion acquisition of The Valspar Corp (NYSE:VAL), which will significantly improve its position in the coatings business outside North America.

Over the past decade, SHW has achieved a return of more than 600%, significantly greater than the S&P 500’s 82% climb in that same period.

If any stock can repeat this kind of performance over the next decade, Sherwin-Williams has to be at the top of the list.

BIG GAINS IN 'BORING' PAINTS AND COATINGS

Today, we're looking at a thriving company in a "boring" industry...

Regular readers know we love companies with simple business models. These companies don't have to use up lots of cash chasing the next big innovation. They "sell the basics" – like tools and cleaning products. Today's company follows the same "basic" business model...

Sherwin-Williams (SHW) is a $44 billion industrial company. It specializes in making paints and coatings. The company boasts well-known brands like Valspar (paints) and Cabot (wood finishes), as well as its own Sherwin-Williams brand.

And folks everywhere are using these products to brighten up their homes... In the most recent quarter, Sherwin-Williams reported record sales of nearly $4.8 billion. That's an increase of almost 28% from the same period last year.

As you can see in the chart below, Sherwin-Williams is in an uptrend. The stock is up nearly 40% over the past year, and recently hit an all-time high. It's just one more example of how companies with boring businesses can generate stellar returns...

HITTING A DOUBLE ON PAINTS AND SEALANTS

Today's chart shows why "boring" businesses can be great investments...

When we say "boring," we mean things like garbage collectors or air-conditioning manufacturers. While you want to own exciting, high-growth tech companies, you should also make some bets on "old reliable" businesses that don't change over time. It isn't a thrilling way to invest – but today's example shows that's not such a bad thing...

Sherwin-Williams (SHW) is a $47 billion paint manufacturer. Making paint isn't a revolutionary business... but it's a steady one, and it's easy to understand.

No coat of paint lasts forever, so folks always come back for more eventually. Sherwin-Williams sold $4.9 billion worth of paint, sealants, and related products in the most recent quarter – all with little to no research and development costs. And sales have risen each year for the past five years.

SHW shares have more than doubled over the same time frame... And they've surged since the company beat earnings expectations last week, hitting a new all-time high. It's one of many "boring" companies that are performing well today...

Sherwin-Williams (SHW)

Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:SHW) has sold paint and coatings now for 152 years.

That’s a pretty impressive record. But it’s a bit unusual to see a paint company in a list of top growth stocks. Usually, it’s some cloud-storage firm or a breakout online retailer.

However, SHW, by its size and reputation, has not only endured but it has positioned itself on top of the coatings heap.

It grew from annual sales of $400,000 in 1866 to annual sales topping $15 billion last year, coming from over 100 countries around the world.

Its size, scope and quality is one reason hardware giant Lowe’s Companies, Inc. (NYSE:LOW) inked a deal to be the only nationwide home seller to offer SHW products.

This is even more exciting given that housing demand is back on track and the interest in homeowners to fixing up their current houses. SHW is rated a “B” in my Portfolio Grader system.
