Teva: Where Did The Bears Go?

Jan. 28, 2018

Summary

Stock has almost doubled since hitting record lows in November.
New CEO has proven his determination in righting the ship.
Overall bearish sentiment has subsided, and “sky is falling mentality” has evaporated.

1. Copaxone, Teva’s flagship drug, which made up almost 40% of Teva’s EBITDA, has lost its market exclusivity.

2. Government's continued pressure on pharmaceutical companies

3. Allergen owning 10% of Teva after generics acquisition could sink stock even further. Now 6.8%.

Pros:-

1. Healthcare costs and aging population, coupled with patent expirations and pressure on high costs for brand name drugs will increase sales for companies like Teva

2. Forward P/E of 5.56 is a welcomed bargain

3. Still the largest manufacturer of generics, Teva succeeds in having its operations vertically integrated and can easily push drugs through its pipeline

4. Currently commands 17% market share within the US, and some estimates put it around 25% for the rest of the world (still unsure if this may decline due Copaxone)

5. Too big to fail -- deeply tied to the State of Israel, even with company layoffs (short interest is 6.9% of float).

6. Has over 100 products planned to launch this year (with nearly 600 generic medicines available), which time will tell how well these could offset the revenue loss of Copaxone

Restructuring:-

1. Reduce cost base (16$B) by 20% ($3B) within the next two years
2. Reducing the workforce by 25% (14,000 people)
3. Develop new unified and simplified organizational structure/hierarchy
4. Optimizing generics portfolio
5. Cut fat off R&D program and pipeline
6. Closure and/or divestment of facilities

Teva warns on 2018 profit, may face migraine drug delays

A key growth driver will be Austedo, Teva’s recently launched treatment for involuntary movements in patients with Huntington’s disease, which is expected to have revenue of $200 million in 2018, Schultz said.

Last week, the company said it planned to raise $5 billion in debt securities.

In December, it announced the suspension of its dividend.

Warren Buffett Stock to Buy: Teva (TEVA)

Buffett surprised the market with a big bet on flailing pharma giant Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (ADR) (NYSE:TEVA) back in Q417.

He gobbled up 19 million shares in TEVA, worth about $358 million. Since then, Buffett hasn’t stopped buying.

He picked up a further 21.6 million shares in Q1. And now for Q2 we see another 6% boost to his position (with 61 million shares). This takes his total bet on TEVA to a staggering $1.05 billion.

There’s no doubt this is a risky move. Out of 14 recent analyst ratings, only three are buys. This is versus 10 buy ratings and one sell rating.

Oppenheimer analyst Christopher Liu (Profile & Recommendations) is sitting this one out. He has a “hold” rating on the stock due to ‘base business headwinds.’

Liu explains “We no longer see a clear path for TEVA to return to growth in a timely manner, and continued pricing pressure in US generics makes us less optimistic its US generic business will meet/ exceed Street expectations in FY2018.”

He is worried that the growth story will be hampered by an ongoing focus on cost cutting/divestments. This is required to ensure it meets its massive $28 billion debt obligations.

However no doubt Buffett sees the cut-priced pharma as a longer-term rebound stock.

Why Warren Buffett's Still Gobbling Up Shares in This Generic Drugmaker

Berkshire Hathaway often stays away from healthcare stocks, but that's not the case with this stock.

by Todd Campbell

Sales fell 18% year-over-year to $4.7 billion and adjusted net income fell 23% year over year to $794 million in Q2 alone.

Pricing pressures caused generic drug sales to fall 29% while doctors shifting to Mylan's lower-cost version of Copaxone caused a 46% decline in Teva's North American Copaxone sales to $464 million.

A restructuring could cut $3 billion from costs next year.

$28 billion in long-term debt.

High-Risk Stocks to Buy: Teva Pharmaceutical (TEVA)

Teva Pharmaceutical (NYSE:TEVA) is a mess right now.

Teva has too much debt and no growth. Its key drug, Copaxone, which treats multiple sclerosis, is facing generic competition from Mylan (NASDAQ:MYL), among others.

Bankruptcy likely isn’t a near-term scenario — but the current trajectory suggests it could occur down the line.

In short, TEVA is a classic contrarian, “buy when there’s blood in the streets” type of play. And there are reasons to take the risk in TEVA stock.

While pressure has persisted on generic drugs, but it won’t last forever.

The company has sold assets to clean up its balance sheet, which has de-risked the story somewhat. In my opinion, Teva is a better version of Valeant, but with an easier path back to normalcy.

It’s a risky path, but if it works TEVA could double simply by reaching a higher multiple and removing bankruptcy fears.
