Also fat, gross-margined but German (and I love the whole continent right now) with high quality and moderate growth at a reasonable price is enterprise software giant SAP SE

As this cycle lengthens and capital expenditures increase, SAP should shine.

It sells at 17 times my 2015 earnings estimate with a 1.8% dividend yield.

Morgan Stanley believes SAP's future prospects are sky-high because of its investment in the cloud.

While heavy R&D costs have eaten into SAP's margins recently, that should change as customers continue to transition to cloud computing.

SAP is the firm's top pick in European software because of the "resilience" in its core license and maintenance business and "best in class cloud growth."

Internet of Things Stocks to Buy: SAP SE (SAP)

A recent IoT gallery at ComputerWorld listed SAP SE (ADR) (NYSE:SAP) as the most powerful IoT company in the world. The call is based on SAP’s HANA Enterprise Resource Planning suite.

Databases will be at the heart of managing the IoT — billions of things can’t be managed any other way. SAP calls its Leonardo a “digital innovation system,” a way to combine all the elements of modern technology from the cloud to blockchain to machine learning in one grand concert. In this new world, data is the new gold.

SAP stock had been pacing rival Oracle until June when the stock just stopped dead in the water. That is not down to analysts changing their views. Most still say you should buy the stock. But the past two-quarters have seen lower net income, even while revenues continue to grow at 10% year-over-year.

SAP is a German company run by an American, Bill McDermott. Its bets on the Internet of Things aren’t its only play for investors. The company is big in workforce planning, in finance, in social media and in forecasting, among other things.

Rather than building its own clouds and software standards for IoT, SAP has partnered with BASF SE (OTCMKTS:BASFY), another German company, to collect data on industrial software from OEMs and service providers, then store it in a single database. This should limit its exposure to the software costs in IoT integration while adding partners for future sales efforts.

As GE proves, it can be as costly to get into a market too-early as too-late. SAP hopes its moderate pace will make it right on time.

SAP dropped 20% — its worst single-day performance since losing 23% on Oct. 23, 1996 — as the German business software giant revised down its 2020 outlook as it said the impact of COVID-19 has been to push back customer investments between one and two years.

SAP said its 2023 operating margin would be up to 5 percentage points lower than it previously targeted.

SAP Shares Collapse After New Lockdowns Force Cuts to Revenue

It expects a fresh wave of lockdowns to hurt demand through the first half of 2021.

SAP said it expects limited growth and margin improvement over the next two years, and moved expectations to meet its 2023 strategy plan out to 2025.

The company now expects adjusted revenue of 27.2 billion euros to 27.8 billion euros ($32.2 billion to $32.9 billion) at constant currencies in 2020, lower than the earlier guidance of 27.8 billion euros to 28.5 billion euros.

Third quarter non-IFRS operating profit decreased by 12% year over year to 2.07 billion euros. That compared to the 2.15 billion-euro average estimate from analysts in a Bloomberg survey.

Revenue in the period declined 4% to 6.54 billion euros compared to analysts’ average 6.89 billion euro estimate.

SAP, the most valuable technology firm in Europe, lowered its 2020 revenue outlook on Monday, citing the reintroduction of lockdowns in some regions and softer demand.

Shares plunged 18% in early trading.

The company, which makes software for business operations, pledged to accelerate its transition to the cloud.

This would allow it to rely less on selling software licenses, a business unit that saw revenue dive last quarter.

But the transition will eat into profits for years. The company has written off its medium-term guidance, rattling investors who aren't sure the new strategy will pay off.

Big picture: SAP competitor Salesforce has seen shares rocket 54% this year thanks to the popularity of its cloud offerings.

If SAP can get it right, there's plenty of money to be made. In the meantime, the company's issues are a reminder that tech is not a one-way bet — and that these days, cloud footprint matters a lot.

SAP goes all in on cloud, scraps mid-term margin goals

by Douglas Busvine

JP Morgan cut its price target for SAP to €120 from €160, and downgraded the stock to "neutral" from "overweight".

Cloud revenue — from subscription-based services hosted at remote data centres — is now expected to triple to €22 billion by 2025.

Total adjusted revenue in 2025 is now forecast at €36 billion and adjusted operating profit at €11.5 billion — implying a margin of 31.9% that is roughly in line with SAP's third-quarter showing.

In the quarter, adjusted total revenue fell by 4% while operating profit fell 12%, based on international financial reporting standards. After adjustments and at constant currency rates, profit rose by 4%.
