Disney tumbles after unveiling plans to double Theme Parks Investment to $60 billion

In a surprise move, Disney looks set to double its capital spending on theme parks and cruises, even as investors focus on continued losses in its media division.

by MARTIN BACCARDAX

In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing published Tuesday, and ahead of its annual investor day at Walt Disney World, Disney said it would allocate $60 billion over the next ten years to "expand and enhance" its Parks & Experiences business.

Parks and Experiences delivered around $8.3 billion in third quarter revenues, Disney reported last month, up 13% from the prior year period and around 37% of the group's overall total.

However, in terms of operating income, the division was, and remains, its most-profitable: Parks and Experiences generated $2.425 billion in operating profits, an 11% increase from last year, offsetting and 18% decline in the group's Media and Entertainment Distribution segment.

Forget Ron DeSantis: Walt Disney has a much bigger problem

by Daniel Kline

Walt Disney World is still performing well above precovid levels: 21% higher in revenue and 29% higher in operating income compared to fiscal 2019.

The theme parks are not Disney's problem. The death of the movie business is.

In 2019 Walt Disney drew in more $11 billion in global box office, or $13 billion when you add in the former Fox properties it also owns. In that year seven Mouse House films crossed the billion-dollar threshold in theaters.

This year, the company will struggle to reach half that and it has no billion-dollar films, with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" closing its theatrical run at $845 million globally.

People aren't less interested in Marvel and Star Wars; they're just getting their fix from Disney+ at an absurdly low price.

Walt Disney, embroiled in another fight with activist investor Nelson Peltz, posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings and said it will seek an additional US$2 billion in cost savings.

Earnings at the world’s largest entertainment company rose to 82 US cents a share, excluding some items, Disney said on Wednesday (Nov 8). That beat the 69 US cent average of analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Revenue grew 5.4 per cent to US$21.2 billion, compared with estimates of US$21.4 billion.

The profit increase and expanded cost cutting will help chief executive officer Bob Iger counter Peltz, whose Trian Fund Management controls a roughly US$2.5 billion stake in Disney and plans to seek several board seats.

Iger had previously committed to cutting more than US$5.5 billion from annual expenses and has already eliminated 7,000 jobs.

Disney’s flagship theme parks delivered the biggest profit boost, with earnings rising 31 per cent to US$1.76 billion in the period ended Sep 30.

Revenue in the division, which includes consumer products, grew 12 per cent to US$8.16 billion, led by 55 per cent growth internationally.

Losses in Disney’s streaming business, including ESPN+, narrowed to US$387 million in the quarter, coming in better than Wall Street projected.

The company has said it’s seeking to turn a profit in that business by the fourth quarter of the new fiscal year just getting underway

Disney Could Begin a Nice 20%-25% Run Starting on Wednesday

by Chris Johnson

We’re seeing some changes in the fundamental picture as Disney moves to embrace the sports betting business along with ESPN and a true soft-landing situation in the economy will have the parks busy as consumers start to loosen-up their travel budgets again.

I like the stock for a nice 20-25% run through 2024.
