Tesla reported third-quarter results after the bell on Wednesday.

Shares rose as much as 2.4% in after-hours trading after the report crossed, but then sank more than 3% after CEO Elon Musk cautioned that the Cybertruck would not deliver significant positive cashflow for 12 to 18 months after production begins.

He also emphasized that the company is focused on making its cars more affordable amid a high-interest rate environment.

GAAP (non-adjusted) net income for the quarter was $1.85 billion, or 53 cents per share.

Total gross profit declined 22% year-over-year.

Total operating margin came in at 7.6%, down significantly from the year-ago quarter’s figure of 17.2%.

The company reported $19.63 billion in automotive revenue and $1.56 billion in revenue from its energy generation and storage business.

Within automotive revenue, the portion from regulatory credits grew in the third quarter to hit $554 million, up from $282 million the previous quarter and $286 million in the third quarter last year.

Margin squeezed

Tesla’s highly anticipated quarterly results likely disappointed many.

Revenue of $23.4 billion was shy of $24 billion estimates, while EPS of $0.66, down 37% from one year ago, was shy of Wall Street’s $0.74 prediction.

Margins were to blame for the profit decline. CEO Elon Musk has been cutting prices to drive unit volume, crimping the bottom-line.

Tesla Inc. – Cloudy outlook on margins

Auto gross margin at 15.9% excl. credits was down 1050bps YoY due to:
1) price cuts;
2) factory downtime;
3) Cybertruck ramp-up. Cybertruck ramp-up is expected to be a margin headwind for 12-18 months.

Why Tesla stock is crumbling — and where it could go next

by Ian Krietzberg

After this week no one can deny that investors are very concerned about further price cuts since volumes are not really responding to the price cuts already taken.

The company's gross margins fell to 17.9% for the quarter, down from its 25.1% gross margins last year.

Instead of laying out a price-cut finish line, Musk left the door open for them to continue at an unknown rate, with no real end in sight.

The CEO, repeatedly discussing high interest rates and monthly car payments, indicated that he thinks more price cuts are still needed.

Musk urged tremendous caution about the Cybertruck and didn't discuss greater autonomy, robotaxis, a $25,000 next-gen model or EV adoption.

Ark is convinced that Tesla's major growth story will center around robotaxis; the short-term fluctuations in the EV game won't really impact success in that sector. Ark projected in April that Tesla will be trading at $2,000 per share by 2027.

the three most important Tesla value drivers are affordability through a $25,000 next-gen vehicle, the successful rollout of Cybertruck and a massive EV education advertising campaign.

UAW President Shawn Fain says he's coming for Elon Musk's Tesla next

The UAW recently won record new contracts with the Detroit Three, bringing its weeks-long strike to a conclusion.

by Ian Krietzberg

The union had been on strike for more than six weeks.

"When we return to the bargaining table in 2028, it won’t just be with the Big Three, but with the Big Five or Big Six."

Tesla’s just an auto company

Tesla shares sank 5.46% after HSBC Global rated the electric vehicle manufacturer as “reduce” and gave it a $146 price target — implying a drop of about 30% from Tesla’s close at $209.98.

Tesla has long tried to justify its share prices by portraying itself as a technology company. But HSBC analysts punctured that narrative, calling it a “very expensive auto company.”
