Tesla cuts US prices for sixth time this year ahead of Q1 results

The company also recently lowered prices in Europe, Israel and Singapore as well as in Japan, Australia and South Korea, expanding a discount drive it started in China in January to spur demand.

Tesla, earlier this month, reported a 4% sequential rise in deliveries in the first quarter, much less than the 17.8% sequential rise in the fourth quarter.

Tesla missed first-quarter profit estimates after a series price cuts designed to boost demand squeezed margins.

Revenue rose 24 per cent to US$23.33 billion in the quarter, nearly in line with Bloomberg estimates of US$23.35 billion.

Profit excluding some items fell to 85 cents a share, slightly below the 86 US cent average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg, while free cash flow slumped to a two-year low of US$441 million. Analysts had expected free cash flow to reach US$3.24 billion in the quarter.

Tesla’s Earnings: So Bad They’re Nearly Good

by SAM QUIRKE

Key Points
Weakening margins have spooked investors.
The bears have won control for now.
But a P/E ratio of 50 is almost too good to ignore

Tesla's Q1 revenue came in at $2.3 billion, which just missed analyst expectations, but was still up 24% year on year.

Tesla aims to achieve a gross margin of around 30% over time and will pursue this by reducing supply chain and production costs wherever possible.

Elon Musk indicated Tesla will keep cutting prices to stoke demand, even after markdowns early this year took a significant toll on profitability.

Tesla’s operating margin shrank to 11.4 per cent in the first quarter, a roughly two-year low, after the company marked down its electric vehicles in January and March.

Musk has done several more rounds of price cuts already this month and said he’s comfortable making less money on each car sold.

Less than a day after telling investors it will focus on volume growth, Tesla is lifting prices on its high-end cars in the U.S.

by MARTIN BACCARDAX
