A NEW HIGH FOR THIS RETAIL GIANT

This retail behemoth isn't going away anytime soon...

Regular readers know we call Wal-Mart (WMT) the World Dominator of retail. But for years, its online sales struggled to keep pace with Amazon (AMZN). Now, that picture is changing...

Last year, Wal-Mart purchased Jet.com – a fast-growing, innovative e-commerce business. Then, the company put former Jet.com CEO Marc Lore in charge of its entire e-commerce business. And he's making some interesting changes...

Wal-Mart now offers customers big discounts for buying products online and picking them up in-store. It is also paying employees to drop off packages along their normal route home from work. It's a win-win setup...

The company saves money on the most expensive aspect of shipping, and its employees can earn more cash. That's some creative cost cutting.

Now, online sales have jumped 63% from a year ago, according to Wal-Mart's latest earnings report. And as you can see, the company's shares have surged in recent months.

They're up around 16% since January... and recently hit a new 52-week high. People have ignored Wal-Mart for years, but this World Dominator isn't going anywhere...

Grocery Stocks: Wal-Mart (WMT)

WMT stock hasn’t bled much since Whole Foods price cuts were announced, but it is still down about 0.3% versus a 1.5% gain for the S&P 500.

The recent weakness is worth noting, and it’s also a compelling buying opportunity.

WMT is hardly affected by this new era of grocery shopping. It already has everyday low prices on groceries, so WFM whacking prices doesn’t exactly shift the price-sensitive Walmart shopper into Whole Foods.

Meanwhile, Amazon is sure to leverage its e-commerce ecosystem to enhance WFM’s omnichannel capabilities. But WMT is already doing this.

Online grocery ordering is already a widely used feature at Walmart. In some areas, doorstep delivery is also a thing.

Walmart is also much, much more than a grocer. It’s an all-in-one shopping destination. This feature gives Walmart a convenience advantage over Whole Foods.

All in all, Walmart will hardly be affected by Amazon’s excursion into the grocery space. At 8.5 times trailing EBITDA, WMT stock isn’t all that expensive. Consequently, this stock should be bought on this unfounded dip.

Walmart

The giant retailer acted very well as a holiday play and it is also on the Merrill Lynch US 1 list.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) operates retail stores in various formats worldwide. Through three segments — Walmart U.S., Walmart International and Sam’s Club — it operates discount stores, supermarkets, supercenters, hypermarkets, warehouse clubs, cash and carry stores, home improvement stores, specialty electronics stores, restaurants, apparel stores, drug stores and convenience stores, as well as retail websites.

Each week, nearly 260 million customers and members visit the company’s 11,535 stores under 72 banners in 28 countries and e-commerce websites in 11 countries.

Earlier this year the company announced a massive $20 billion stock repurchase plan that was met with open arms by Wall Street.

Many think it is in an effort to ward off potential activist investors. Most shareholders could care less and are thrilled by the buyback.

Shareholders are paid a 2.05% dividend. The Merrill Lynch price target is $120. The posted consensus target is $101.33. The stock traded at $99.20 per share.

Earnings Report Date: Tuesday, February 20, before market open

Obviously, investors throughout the market are going to pay careful attention to the numbers from Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT).

Results from the world’s largest retailer reflect US consumer spending. And the fiscal Q4 numbers should provide a gauge on that spending over the key holiday period.

At the moment, expectations don’t look terribly high. The Street projects 3% sales growth and a 5.4% increase in EPS, to $1.37. Given the momentum of Walmart of late and a pullback that began in late January, Walmart probably has room for post-earnings gains.

But for WMT itself, the reaction to the quarter likely will go beyond the numbers. Walmart is clearly trying to adapt to the digital age.

It’s acquired a number of online companies, including a rumored $10 billion investment in India’s Flipkart. It’s changed its strategy around the Sam’s Club unit, surprisingly closing stores last month and then offering free shipping in a clear shot at Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ:COST) and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN). The company is even changing its name to highlight its ‘omnichannel’ offerings.

So the Q4 call, and the reaction to the Q4 release, won’t be just about the numbers. Walmart will have an opportunity to detail its strategy going forward. It will provide more color on what it will do with tax savings that aren’t going to employees.

Combined with holiday numbers, it makes for an important quarter for Walmart. The company can either justify the recent big rally — or see that rally finally fizzle.

Walmart holiday quarter profit falls, comparable sales beat estimates

NEW YORK, Feb 20 (Reuters) - U.S. retailer Walmart Inc on Tuesday reported a lower-than-expected quarterly profit even as comparable sales in the U.S. market rose for the 14th consecutive quarter.

Sales at U.S. stores open at least a year rose 2.6 percent, excluding fuel, in the fourth quarter ended Jan. 31. Analysts forecast a gain of 2 percent, according to a poll by research firm Consensus Metrix.

Adjusted earnings per share increased to $1.33 per share, missing expectations of $1.37 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Online sales grew 23 percent during the quarter, slower than the previous quarter's 50 percent rise.

Walmart Stock Nears Key Support After Earnings Miss

By Justin Kuepper

Management primarily attributed the slower growth to the Jet.com acquisition that added scale but anticipates the growth rate to ramp back up to the 40% range after the first quarter.
Full-year e-commerce sales remain up 44% versus the prior year.

If the stock breaks down from these levels, it could reach the 200-day moving average at around $86.21 or reaction lows at around $77.50.

If the stock rebounds, traders should watch for a move to S1 support and the 50-day moving average at around $100.00 on the upside.
