Qualcomm lifts outlook on advanced phone demand

===

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wireless chip developer Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) raised its outlook for the June quarter and full year on Thursday amid higher demand for advanced mobile phones, sending its shares up 5.5 percent.

.....

Qualcomm's improved outlook comes during a week of excitement in the market for smart phones, which offer faster Web links and multimedia features like e-mail and pictures. Apple Inc (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) unveiled a new version of its iPhone, seeking to better compete against the likes of BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) (RIMM.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz).

Charter Equity Research analyst Ed Snyder said Qualcomm appears to be benefiting from the competition playing out among mobile handset makers.

"Their largest customers, Samsung (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and LG (066570.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), are gaining share in 3G, so Qualcomm is gaining share," he said.

....

"March quarter reports by our licensees indicate an increased mix of high-end devices driving a higher average selling price," Qualcomm Chief Executive Paul Jacobs said in a statement.

Based on reported royalties from its customers, Qualcomm estimated quarterly shipments of about 107 million devices using CDMA at an average price of $226 per unit.

That falls at the midpoint of it previous estimate of 105 million to 109 million, but the average price is up $3 from its previous view.

For the full year, Qualcomm increased its earnings forecast to a range of $2.09 to $2.13 per share, above a previous estimate of $2.04 to $2.09.

The company had raised its full-year earnings forecast in April, but the range disappointed investors at the time, with some worrying that growth may be concentrated in low-end phones.

Qualcomm shares were up $2.54 to $48.85 near midday on the Nasdaq.

Qualcomm, Nokia deal ends long legal battle

http://www.reuters.com/articlePrint?art ... 8020080724
----
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) settled a three-year, three-continent legal battle on Wednesday when Nokia agreed to make an upfront payment and ongoing royalties to the U.S. technology company.

Investors, relieved that the fight was finally over, drove Qualcomm's shares 15 percent higher to $51.75 in after-hours trade after it unveiled a 15-year pact with Nokia, the No. 1 cell phone maker. The deal covers the world's most widely used mobile-phone technologies and some key emerging ones.

The companies did not reveal specific financial details but some analysts saw Nokia as the winner.

"The positive financial impact of this agreement is within Nokia's original expectations," Nokia Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said in a statement.

Nokia spokeswoman Laurie Armstrong said that the royalty rates under the new agreement were lower than those under its previous agreement with Qualcomm.

Nokia had been pressuring Qualcomm for a cut in the rate it was paying Qualcomm in royalties under a pact that expired in April 2007. Analysts estimated that rate at 4 to 5 percent.

Stifel Nicolaus analyst Cody Acree said that a Nokia success could lead other Qualcomm clients to look for lower royalty rates or start new legal fights.

"Investors are giving Qualcomm immediate credit in after-hours trade but it's not cut and dried," Acree said. "It could put some pressure on the royalty models or in chipset volumes that Qualcomm hasn't had to deal with in the past."

Qualcomm chip customers include Korea's Samsung Electronics (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and LG Electronics (066570.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz). Its rivals include Texas Instruments Inc (TXN.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Broadcom Corp (BRCM.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Infineon Technologies AG (IFXGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz).

Qualcomm officials did not return calls requesting comment beyond its statement.

Under the agreement, Nokia has a license to use all of Qualcomm's patents in its phones and network equipment. In return, Nokia agreed to allow Qualcomm to use its technology in its chips.

Nokia also agreed to assign ownership of a number of patents to Qualcomm, including patents essential to the widely used wireless technology standards WCDMA, GSM and OFDMA.

As part of the agreement, Nokia also said it would withdraw an anti-competitiveness complaint it made along with several other companies against Qualcomm to the European Commission.

Qualcomm said the agreement paved the way for "enhanced opportunities between the companies in a number of areas" but did not give further details.

Qualcomm outside counsel Steven Strauss, a partner at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP, said the agreement was reached Wednesday afternoon. "We've been having discussions over the past couple of days," Strauss told Reuters.

After the settlement was announced, Qualcomm posted a quarterly profit in line with expectations and revenue slightly ahead of analyst targets. It said it would give financial forecasts during its conference call on Thursday.

Excluding items such as its investment arm, Qualcomm earned 55 cents a share for its third quarter ended June 29, on revenue of $2.8 billion. Analysts on average had expected earnings of 55 cents share on revenue of $2.71 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.

Qualcomm shares had closed at $44.82 on Nasdaq, up 1.6 percent in the regular session. Nokia U.S. shares were up very slightly after closing at $26.70.

Qualcomm launches new wireless tech for emerging markets

http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/Q ... t=hplatest

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM:35.07, -0.24, -0.7%) said Wednesday it would launch a new PC platform that allows users in emerging markets to access the Internet through a 3G wireless network.

The San Diego technology company claims the new platform, called Kayak, fills a niche between desktop computers, which generally depend on landlines, and Internet-capable wireless devices. "The broad footprint of 3G networks means that wireless is the answer to Internet access for worldwide markets," said Luis Pineda, senior vice president of marketing and product management at Qualcomm CDMA Technologies.

Initial Kayak units will be manufactured by Taiwan's Inventec Corporation and will use Opera Software for Internet browsing

NOTES:

- China's 3G licensee to use Qualcomm's products as it support both the 3G CDMA and China's own TD-SCDMA.
- Have relationship with ZTE and Huawei (both are expected to capture a huge part of China 3G market)

Possible play:
- possible rebound as support level is near

Risk :
- When is earning reports out?
- Chart shows further downside to the price level.

Update.

Since hitting the high in early Jan 2009, Qualcomm has not been making higher high.

In fact, with each rally, it is slowly moving lower. The support level is still holding at this point in time (remains range bound).

However, yesterday, it went below the 50day EMA.

Moving forward, it is unlikely that QCOM will have a fantastic 2009 even with the licensing from ZTE, Huawei and Nokia.

I expect sales to remain weak, with margins being eroded.

Their success will depend on their ability to come out with the next generation chipset (beyond 3G) before the competitors does.

7 Cash-Rich Stocks to Buy: Qualcomm (QCOM)

Total Cash: $16 billion

With $29.6 billion in cash and long-term investments on its books, chipmaker Qualcomm (QCOM) is flush with cash, not to mention an addition $14 million in long-term investments.

Ever-mindful of its fiduciary duty to shareholders, QCOM stock has paid a regular dividend since 2003, and the company has even managed to grow its payout every year since then, for the last 12 years.

I named QCOM as one of the 5 Best Unloved Dividend Stocks to Buy earlier this month, noting that sales have grown by 20% annually over the last five years. Also:

“Here’s the real kicker: Qualcomm has zero long-term debt on its balance sheet, giving it far more flexibility with its cash. That’s one investor perk of owning shares of a company that doesn’t have to shell out a ton of interest expense.”

Zero debt? Hard not to consider that a huge plus. Even if Qualcomm wasn’t cash flow-positive (it is, to the tune of $1.8 billion in 2014) it could take to the bond markets and borrow billions of dollars on the cheap to fund whatever it saw fit.

Plus, by making an early investment in Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone maker coming out of nowhere to challenge Apple, QCOM should benefit from Xiaomi’s meteoric rise.

Qualcomm also is a chip supplier to Xiaomi, so QCOM gets to double-dip on Xiaomi’s success.

Tech Bargain No. 1: Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM)

The Internet of Everything is… a massive network of interconnected devices like appliances, televisions, phones, and even toothbrushes, all exchanging data.Flash Memory is… a kind of electrically erasable, programmable read-only memory (EPROM) using blocks instead of bytes. A section of memory cells can be rewritten or erased in a single action, or "flash."

Cloud Computing is… a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, and on-demand network access to a shared pool of computing resources, like storage and applications, which can be supplied with little management effort.

Wall Street has yet to price a big move for Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM) – the world's largest mobile chip firm – and its $2.4 billion buyout bid of CSR, which is itself a pioneer in Bluetooth and wireless connectivity systems.

CSR ranks as a leader in automotive "infotainment systems," telematics, and technology for the Internet of Everything (IoE). This last market is a potential goldmine for Qualcomm.

The International Data Corporation expects the IoE market, with its billions of interconnected devices, to grow from a value of $1.9 trillion in 2013 to $7.1 trillion by 2020.

Perhaps the best thing about a stock like Qualcomm is that it's a high-margin play on the company's massive patent portfolio. Its patents form the foundation for most of the world's mobile communications.

With an $85 billion market cap, the STOCK TRADES at $54.30. It has 30% operating margins and trades at just 11.5 times forward earnings, a 42% discount from the Nasdaq 100.
