Stocks to Sell: Raytheon (RTN)

Raytheon (RTN) actually has a history of putting up a slight gain in July, but it doesn’t look like it will do so this month.

RTN has been in a steep downtrend since May when a legal challenge from competitors threw a $1 billion radar-contract with the U.S. Air Force into doubt.

The market hates uncertainty, and technicians hate death crosses. Between the two, RTN is down 11% for the year-to-date after notching a new 52-week low on the last day of June. Needless to say, the stock is much closer to its low than its high, and is starting to look sick.

The recent action has caused the 200-day moving average to roll over. With shares 8% and 9% below their 50- and 200-day averages, respectively, RTN won’t be testing resistance for some time.

THE BULL MARKET CONTINUES IN THIS SECTOR

Today, we're looking at the long-term uptrend of an "offense" contractor...

Regular readers know how we feel about the defense sector. In short, our government spends so much money on foreign wars that we believe it should be called the "offense" sector.

One company that continues to benefit from that spending is Raytheon (RTN). The company makes cruise missiles and laser-guided bombs.

The U.S. Navy recently awarded Raytheon a $365 million contract to produce components for its Aegis weapons system. And Monday, it won a huge contract from the U.S. Marine Corps to help rebuild vehicle parts, such as engines, transmissions, and electronics.

Raytheon shares continue to rise, recently touching a new all-time high. The stock has climbed more than 35% over the past year and is up nearly 300% from its September 2011 low. The "offense" sector continues its long-term march higher.

One Billion Reasons Why This Company Is Good for Another 100% Profit

by Keith Fitz-Gerald

Raytheon has invested a jaw-dropping $3.5 billion in its cybersecurity business over the past eleven years that has, as of yet, gone almost totally unrecognized by the markets.

Just last week, for example, the company launched an NSA-certified next-generation Ethernet encryption system to protect network communications handling sensitive information, including and up to Top Secret/SC1 status. That gives Raytheon the ability to sell the very same KG-350 Ethernet encryption system to commercial, government, and military customers immediately – and bring hundreds of millions to the bottom line at the same time.

Just 60 days ago, DHS – the Department of Homeland Security – reaffirmed Raytheon’s $1 billion contract to safeguard dozens of Federal agencies’ data from cybercrime and keep many of the antiquated computer systems similar to those I’ve just told you about running. That’s good for profit margins, too.

Raytheon’s cyber security division, Forcepoint, more than tripled net sales last year, bringing in $328 million compared to $104 million in 2014. That’s a surge that’s roughly in line with the speed in which the cybersecurity sector is growing, and confirmation that we’re on the right track once again.

Raytheon recently beat earnings estimates by 2.9% while increasing them 6.1% year-over-year at a time when lesser companies are struggling just to make ends meet.

At the same time, the company increased guidance from $6.93-$7.13 per share to $7.13-$7.33 per share, making it one of the very few solid growth choices you can tap into today…

A Double-Digit Profit Play for the Upcoming Defense "Supercycle"

By MICHAEL A. ROBINSON

Aerospace forecaster AeroWeb says that in 2015, missiles were an $11 billion business in the United States alone; that's not including the dozens of other countries that are actively looking to enhance their offensive and defensive missile capabilities.

Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target (PATRIOT) missile defense continues to be one of the biggest sellers in the world, for between $2 million and $3 million per system.

There are 1,106 launchers deployed by U.S. forces, with another 172 exported to allies like Germany, Greece, Israel, Taiwan, Japan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The company has manufactured more than 10,000 missiles for these launchers.

Missile defense and radar is a $23 billion a year business for Raytheon right now. And even during the defense sector's recent hard times – "sequestration" – Raytheon has been putting up 3% to 5% growth annually.

There's a new version of the PATRIOT, Terminal High Altitude Aerial Defense (THAAD).

Where PATRIOTs have an operational range of about 21 miles, THAAD has an operational range of 120 miles.

In October of last year, the United States offered to place a THAAD battery (about 100 troops) in South Korea. With THAAD, one battery could stop virtually all incoming missile threats from North Korea.

Raytheon released its second-quarter numbers for 2016 in late July. And they look very encouraging.

Sales were up 3% for the quarter. Booking grew 10% from last year, year to date. Total operating margin was up significantly, from 11% in second-quarter 2015, to nearly 16% in the second quarter of 2016.

Its book-to-bill ratio is a mere 1.18% moving forward, which means that it is getting paid and delivering on the sales it's making.

Raytheon Wins Twin Contracts from U.S. Navy Worth $161M

By Zacks Equity Research

Raytheon Company RTN has won a contract from the U.S. Navy for offering cyberspace science, research, engineering, and technology integration.

Valued at $98.1 million, this is a three-year contract that includes one two-year option ordering period which, if exercised, would raise the potential value of this contract to $165.9 million.

Majority of the work will be executed in San Diego and a very minimal percentage at other continental U.S. and outside continental U.S. locations. Work is expected to be over by Sep 14, 2019.

This contract was awarded by the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific, San Diego, CA, and will utilize research, development test and evaluation, operations and maintenance as well as other procurement funds.

Meanwhile, this defense giant has also grabbed another contract for the manufacture and delivery of 18 AN/APG-79 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars for Navy F/A-18E/F and EA-18G aircraft. Valued at $63 million, this contract was awarded by Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, MD.

In recent years, Raytheon has invested more than $3.5 billion to expand its cybersecurity capabilities, as cybersecurity incidents have escalated an average 66% on a yearly basis between 2009 and 2014 globally.
