RTN Targets Commercial Cybersecurity Sector (RTN)

by Daniel Kobialka

More than 20,000 organizations leverage the Forcepoint platform to minimize cyber threats, and the platform's success has helped RTN bolster its commercial cybersecurity market reach.

In the second quarter of 2016, Forcepoint recorded net sales of $138 million, up from $57 million one year earlier.

This sector is expected to expand at a 10.6% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2016 and 2021. As a result, the segment could be worth $202.36 billion by 2021, making it exceedingly valuable for RTN.

Raytheon Co. (RTN): If you want to hedge your bets on military spending, Raytheon is the defense stock for you.

It has a lower dependence on the US government than Northrop (around 68% of sales) and a revenue stream that’s as balanced as you can get: each of its four main businesses chips in about 25% of total sales.

And like Northrop, it’s sitting on a backlog that equates to about 1.5 years’ worth of sales.

Here are two things I love about Raytheon: it churns out missiles, torpedoes and guided munitions that constantly need to be replaced and it’s an R&D stud, having boosted its spending in this area by 57% in the past five years.

That outlay is lighting a fire under Raytheon’s underappreciated cybersecurity business, which accounts for just 2% of total revenue now but saw its sales soar 142% in the second quarter.

That gives Raytheon the ability to profit from two growing trends: higher defense spending and the boom in cybersecurity, which will be a $101-billion business by 2018, up from $75 billion today, according to IT research firm Gartner.

The dividend completes the package: the payout yields just 2.1% now, but it’s up 70% in the past five years and is easily covered by earnings and free cash flow.

The $43.4 billion defense contractor based in Waltham, Mass., Raytheon provides government markets around the world with state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration, and other weapons capabilities.

It's shown a remarkable ability to innovate and change with the times. Believe it or not, the company's original focus was on refrigeration technology.

Not many people know that its first product was a revolutionary little vacuum tube that allowed radios and other small appliances to plug directly into an electricity grid, eliminating the need to use expensive, short-lived batteries in everything.

Then the company distinguished itself with the discovery of microwave cooking in 1945 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Raytheon quickly built upon that early success and soon moved into radar systems, missiles, satellites, aircraft, and even spacecraft – markets it still dominates today.

At a Glance:

Raytheon Co. (NYSE: RTN)
Price: $151.40
Market Cap: $44.4 Billion

Most people look at that progression and think the company simply moved from product to product, but that's not true. In fact, the company continually reinvented itself by leveraging increasingly specialized knowledge.

To that end, the former fridge-maker capped a busy 2016 by securing more than $1 billion worth of contracts in the final week of December, including a $600 million contract to upgrade the Patriot missile defense system of an "undisclosed member of the 13 nations" that possesses the technology.

And now, Raytheon's setting its sights on another growth industry: cybersecurity.

Just last autumn, for example, the company launched an NSA-certified, next-generation Ethernet encryption system to protect network communications handling sensitive information, including and up to Top Secret/SC1 status.

That's an important move because it gives Raytheon the ability to sell the very same KG-350 Ethernet encryption system to commercial, government, and military customers immediately – and to simultaneously bring hundreds of millions to the bottom line that are not yet priced in.

Last summer, the Department of Homeland Security reaffirmed Raytheon's $1 billion contract to safeguard dozens of federal agencies' data from cybercrime and keep many of its older legacy computer systems running. That's good for profit margins, too.

Trump Stocks to Watch: Raytheon (RTN)YTD Gains: 8.9%
52-Week Performance: 26.2%
Price Target: $168.67

Though Raytheon Company (NYSE:RTN) is best known as the world’s largest missile maker, the company’s biggest strength lies in making sophisticated electronics systems that do everything from directing artillery to routing aircraft.

RTN is a huge player in missile defense systems such as Iron Dome that protects Israel and has capabilities in growth areas such as civilian air traffic control and cyber security.

Like LMT, however, RTN is in Wall Street’s penalty box for a fourth-quarter earnings miss and a lackluster 2017 earnings outlook.

Verdict: This is the one major defense contractor worth buying. Think of it this way; the U.S. military depends on RTN to fight our enemies and protect our allies.
