How I Am Playing Nvidia as the CES Heats Up Vegas

Posturing has already begun ahead of the consumer electronics show, as NVDA talks up its new gaming chip.

by Stephen Guilfoyle

This weekend from Vegas, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced the new GeForce RTX 2060, now the latest GPU based on the new-ish Turing architecture.

What's significant about this new chip? Basically, that because this GPU is priced lower than Nvidia's first three Turing-based offerings at $349 retail, it has the potential to reach tens of millions of gamers globally.

Nvidia considers the new chip more than adequate for the mainstream crowd and still 60% faster than previous generation chips. This new product is expected to be available on Jan. 15.

Credit Suisse Sounds Alarm On Risks To Nvidia Estimates

by Shanthi Rexaline

Excess graphic inventory is likely to persist into the April quarter, with channel checks suggesting elevated 1060 inventories due to slower demand and the reluctance of original design manufacturers to reduce average selling prices.

Credit Suisse expects ASP declines and inventory digestion for 1060 to accelerate given the introduction of the midrange RTX 2060 at a compelling ASP of $349 and performance.

"Our work suggests $700 million in excess NVDA channel inventory at the end of October," comprised of a $475-million reduction in the January quarter and the remainder in April, the analyst said.

Oppenheimer keeps $250 price target on Nvidia after CES meeting

After sitting down with management at the Consumer Electronics Show, Oppenheimer analyst Rick Schafer maintains an Outperform rating on Nvidia with a $250 price target.

The tone of the meeting was confident as management recapped the company's keynote announcement of its new RTX 2060 card, Schafer tells investors in a research note.

The analyst views the current crypto-related channel inventory issue as transitory and believes Nvidia's long-term structural growth drivers remain intact.

He views the company as a secular growth and margin expansion story, which he says is "increasingly rare in the semiconductor group."

Atif Malik from Citi has a NVDA target rating Buy and a 244$ price target.

Nvidia Shares Just Lost 14%. Wall Street Analysts Try to Explain Why

by Aaron Pressman

The company said that it had $2.2 billion in revenue, far short of the $2.7 billion it had forecast.

The pullback in spending by cloud data centers was “more troubling” that the problems selling gaming cards, as the company did little to explain what was happening.

Nvidia introduced its latest line of graphics cards for video gamers last year based on its Turing chip design. But the big performance gains in the new cards was mostly for a feature that simulates light reflections known as ray tracing. Not many games yet take advantage of the improved ray tracing feature.

Jeffries analyst Mark Lipacis wrote that the market for graphics cards on the data center should grow to $20 billion overall within five years.

Nvidia Short-Sellers Reap $457 Million in Monday's Rout, S3 Says

by Ryan Vlastelica

Short sellers “are up $457 million in mark-to-market profits” on Monday, “nearly wiping away the $503 million of mark-to-market losses they incurred before today’s price move”.

The number of Nvidia shares sold short has risen 55 percent since the company’s weaker-than-expected forecast in November.

Currently, more than 19.2 million shares are being shorted, up from roughly 12.4 million before the November results. That leaves Nvidia holding the ignominious position as the largest short among semiconductor companies.

How China’s gamers could hurt Nvidia’s Q4 earnings

by Daniel Howley

Wall Street’s eyes will be on chip maker Nvidia (NVDA) when it announces its Q4 2019 earnings on Feb. 14.

In January revealed that it was slashing its Q4 revenue estimates from $2.7 billion down to $2.2 billion for the quarter.

China is one of the Nvidia’s largest markets, bringing in $704 million in revenue in Q3 2019. That’s surpassed only by Taiwan, which captured $929 million in revenue and the nebulous Other Asia Pacific, which brought in $742 million.

With fewer gamers purchasing GPUs in general due to a lack of games that take advantage of the Nvidia’s new RTX graphics chips and the slowing economy taking money out of consumers’ pockets, China’s gamers could have a major impact on Nvidia’s Q4 earnings.

ASICs, have proven to be better mining machines for cryptocurrency than the general purpose graphics cards that Nvidia produces.
