Earnings transcript.

http://seekingalpha.com/article/90644-n ... eed&page=1

Talks about why they screwed up the last quarter - 1-time charge for repairs/warranty (production problem), excess 65nm inventory, bad pricing strategy, market weakness, market transition (from mid-range desktop PCs to lower-end desktop or notebook PCs), high operating expenses, etc.

Talks about their corrective actions - correcting their pricing strategies, moving their 65nm inventories so they can realize cost benefits from switching to the newer 55nm products, etc.

Also, talks about a few products/technologies -
- CUDA, they seem very enthusiastic about this (parallel computing architecture); GeForce 8 family and up already CUDA-compatible; talks about a market for homebrew super computers (for researchers), and also how this technology will help in the tedious video transcoding work (e.g. converting PC graphics routines for use on mobile devices); also talks about second half product launches that will bring CUDA to consumers (I assume this is talking about applications/games that are developed using CUDA code)

- Tegra, they seem hot on this thing; this is their product for the mobile devices

- UMPCs, they have no offering here; basically this is a market they are not targeting (and from the sounds of it, they don't seem too hot about the UMPC)

- Mobile Workstation - they've grown from ~40% market share to ~90% market share in 18 months (no sources cited)

Nvidia Swings To a Net Loss On Chip Woes
By DON CLARK
August 13, 2008; Page B6

Nvidia Corp. reported its first quarterly loss in nearly five years, hurt by technical problems with some chips as well as pricing pressures.

The Silicon Valley company, whose technology helps manage graphics in personal computers, recorded a $196 million charge in its fiscal second quarter to cover costs associated with the technical issues. Nvidia warned in early July that some laptop chips were failing at unusually high rates, because of problems with materials used to package them.

Nvidia also "underestimated" the price and performance of the latest graphics chips from its chief rival, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Jen-Hsun Huang, Nvidia's chief executive officer, said during a conference call with analysts. The miscalculation "led us to misposition our fall lineup" of chips, he added.

Nvidia Shares Fall After First-Quarter Forecast Trails Estimates

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-02-1 ... -fall.html

Nvidia Corp. (NVDA), a maker of graphics processors, fell in late trading after its first-quarter sales forecast missed estimates, providing more evidence that hard- disk shortages are cutting into personal-computer production.

Revenue for the period ending April 30 will be $900 million to $930 million, the Santa Clara, California-based company said yesterday in a statement. Analysts had estimated $940.4 million on average, according to a Bloomberg survey.

Nvidia also abandoned its fiscal 2013 projection because turmoil in the PC market has made it harder to predict sales. The company had already cut its forecast for the fourth quarter, saying last month that a lack of disk drives from flood-ravaged Thailand hurt production of PCs. Nvidia gets most of its revenue from its GeForce chips, which are used to create high-end graphics in desktop and notebook computers.

“Their guidance for the first quarter is significantly below what the Street was looking for,” said Patrick Wang, an Evercore Partners Inc. in New York. He has an underweight rating on the stock.

Nvidia shares fell as much as 6 percent in extended trading to $15.20 yesterday. The stock, up 17 percent this year, had dropped less than 1 percent to $16.17 at the close in New York.

Thailand Flooding

Last year’s flooding in Thailand shut down production of disk drives and increased prices of the components. That delayed manufacturing of PCs and prompted some computer makers to exclude graphics cards from their systems -- an effort to keep their prices down.

The company scrapped its full-year earnings predictions without giving a new forecast. Nvidia had projected sales of $4.7 billion to $5.7 billion for the fiscal year ending in January 2013.

The shortage of disk drives will probably wipe out PC shipment growth in calendar 2012, Chief Executive Officer Jen- Hsun Huang said in an interview. The company also is struggling to get enough chips made with the latest production technique from supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TSM)

“The yield is below our expectations for the moment,” he said. “We’re expecting disk-drive shortages to continue.”

Nvidia’s fourth-quarter net income fell 32 percent to $116 million, or 19 cents a share, from $171.7 million, or 29 cents, a year earlier. Sales climbed 7.5 percent to $953.2 million in the period, which ended Jan. 29.

First-quarter gross margin, or the percentage of sales remaining after deducting the cost of production, will be 49.2 percent, plus or minus 1 percentage point, according to the statement. Analysts had estimated a gross margin of 52 percent.

The company is trying to branch out into microprocessors for phones, lessening its reliance on PCs. Nvidia’s Tegra processor is designed to challenge products from Texas Instruments Inc. and Qualcomm Inc. Nvidia said last month that orders for those chips have been slow because customers are waiting for an updated Tegra, due this quarter.

Customers will begin announcing phones featuring Tegra 3 soon, Huang said. He expects revenue from that product to increase by 50 percent this year.

NVDA has fall below the Kijun sen (trendline).

While it is still trading above the kumo, we can see that the Tenkan sen is pointing down fairly sharply.

A bearish cross may form if $15 support does not holds.

Vested. Short.

Follow up post on $NVDA bearish signal on Feb 29

$NVDA continue its way down and is sitting on right on the kumo support.

However, the kumo support is thin for $NVDA and it is likely to pierce through it easily.

Target price : $11.50

Report: Apple drops Nvidia's Kepler from low-range MacBooks

http://www.tgdaily.com/hardware-feature ... e-macbooks

It seems as if Nvidia is having difficulty manufacturing its upcoming Kepler GPU lineup due to a supply shortage at TSMC that has been linked to internal (TSMC) 28nm issues.

According to veteran tech guru Charlie Demerjian, the shortage may have prompted Apple to drop Nvidia's long-awaited Kepler GPU from its next-gen low-range MacBooks.

Meaning, the upcoming laptops probably won't be equipped with a discrete GPU, and will just have to make do with Intel's GT2 integrated Ivy Bridge chipset.

"[However], this doesn't mean that Nvidia is completely out at Apple, the Intel GPUs are too awful to satisfy the higher end laptops, so there will need to be something in those," Demerjian explained in a detailed analysis posted on SemiAccurate.

"What that something is, we don't definitively know yet, but the possibilities are vanishingly small."

Demerjian also noted that while lower end MacBooks will simply do without a discrete GPU, the higher end parts will remain unchanged, with the middle tier offering some discrete GPU options for select models.

"For Nvidia, this hard fought win at Apple just went up in smoke for the reasons we have been warning readers about since last summer. The largest single order for the GPU maker this year was scaled way way back, but we can't say the exact percentage," writes Demerjian.

"By the time there are new bids for the next generation laptops, [Intel's] Haswell will essentially kill off the segment that Apple would have used, meaning this market is dead forever. [Yes], it may sound dramatic, but this is the end of the mid-range GPU segment as a standalone part. This most lucrative slice of the market is now on its last legs."

$NVDA has officially breakdown from the kumo support.

We can see 3 signals aligned from the Ichimoku chart:

1. A bearish cross from the Tenkan sen and Kijun sen

2. Pierce through kumo support

3. Leading kumo is about to twist; confirming the change in trend.

The cause of it? It was reported that Apple is cutting back on the use of NVDA chips in Mac as they faced supply issues.

2. The trend will END but I don't know WHEN.
