Best Stocks to Buy: Nvidia (NVDA)

Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the next leg in the Digital Age.

The stock is up 100% in the past year and more than 1,500% in the past 5 years. And every year there are people who say that the growth for NVDA is overrated and it can’t continue to grow at the pace it’s growing.

The fact is, NVDA has heard stories of its demise, even when it was producing high-end graphics processing units (GPUs), usually for hardcore gamers and scientists.

But all that has changed now. And with the advent of cloud computing, the huge demand for mobile computing, the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) and new virtual and augmented reality technologies, NVDA is at the center of it all.

Even after all this massive growth, it still only sports a P/E of 48.

Nvidia: The Titan V Shows It's Lonely At The Top

by David Barbalas

Summary

Nvidia launches the Titan V, offers comparable performance to the Tesla V100 for a third of the price.

With recent news about Intel and AMD wanting to expand into the workstation GPU market, Nvidia demonstrates its unchallenged position in the upper end of the GPU market.

Rebuttal from AMD should be interesting to follow as AMD EYPC processors are rolling out into server racks. AMD workstation cards might follow.

Near-term market dominance from Nvidia should continue to provide a wide economic moat. Investors should expect consistent growth that the stock has become known for.

Nvidia’s unexpected release of the Titan V at the Neural Information Processing Systems conference is another display of dominance in the high-end GPU market. The $3,000 price tag is hefty, but the performance it's expected to bring for users should be relatively close to the current workstation Tesla V100, which retails for around $10,000.

AMD’s EPYC processor technology is beginning to gain train with OEM companies like HP (HPE) and Dell (DVMT). AMD has partnerships with major players in the cloud computing market like Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT), as well as major partnerships with Chinese companies investing in developing AI and deep learning technologies.

Offering products at a lower price point may help AMD take market share away from Intel and Nvidia.

AMD, Nvidia stocks fall as analyst says AI will need different chips in 2018

By Emily Bary

Analysts at Susquehanna suggested that application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) could become more important than graphics processing units (GPUs) for 2018.

Our discussions with numerous thought leaders in the industry suggest ASICs may replace much of today's GPU infrastructure over time," he added.

Plus, GPUs could become less useful for the mining of cryptocurrencies in 2018, according to Rolland.

A warning to Nvidia and AMD: GPUs may not hold AI chip crown forever

By Therese Poletti

Opinion: ASICs could lead to AI success for new chip startup, as well as established public companies

ASICs can be customized for their workloads, as can another type of chip, the field programmable gate array, or FPGA, a type of chip that has also been put forth as a potential beneficiary as AI progresses.

In cryptocurrency mining, where GPUs have been used early in a digital currency’s lifespan before turning to ASICs once the task gets tougher.

Bitcoin miners typically use ASICs, and Ethereum miners are expected to make the switch to ASIC this year.

Nvidia should still be an important figure in AI, and has its own ASIC-based tensor processing unit to pitch, but other chip makers could benefit from changes moving forward.

Rolland noted that FPGAs designed by Silicon Valley veteran chip company Xilinx Inc.are being used by Amazon Web Services AMZN, -0.08% , but he believes that while FPGAs may benefit from more AI workloads, they may have a limited footprint in contrast to ASICs.

For those chips, Rolland points to Broadcom Ltd. which he notes helped create AI-focused chips for Alphabet Inc.’s Google GOOGL,and potentially Cavium Inc. CAVM, which has discussed ASICs specifically designed for AI but is a bit of a mystery ahead of a proposed merger with Marvell Technology Group Ltd. MRVL.

Another company that could benefit is a rare chip unicorn. Rolland hosted a fascinating conference call last month for investors with Andrew Feldman, Chief Executive and founder of a stealth chip startup called Cerebras, which now has a $1 billion private valuation. Feldman is developing ASICs for artificial intelligence workloads, and described on the call why GPUs are not the best chips for AI.

One limitation is that the cores, or threads of the GPU, do not talk to each other, he said, which creates a big communication constraint. He gave a metaphor as an example.

Feldman spoke about the limitations of the GPU architecture in AI, without discussing in any details what Cerebras is doing. He did note that the company has 60 engineers with a combined 1,200 years of experience working on processors.

Opinion: Nvidia pulls away from rivals with lower-cost development hardware for machine learning

ASIC chips, like GPUs and central processing units made by Intel Corp. INTC, , have been around for a long time, but Rolland said he has high hopes for this chip technology because of the ability to customize these chips for different customers and workloads.

“We think ASICs are the long-term winner here,” Rolland said in his note, which listed Broadcom, Marvell and Microsemi Inc. MSCC, as his best bets for chips in 2018.

Nvidia's New Chip Is A Marvel; Catastrophe Headlines Are Overblown

By Ophir Gottlieb

Summary

TPU is not an existential threat to Nvidia's GPU ecosystem.

Nvidia's Volta is a TPU monster.

Nvidia's data center business is booming, and has tailwinds for much more.

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), and Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) purchase from Nvidia, at scale, and this business line is a winner, right now. Tencent, Alibaba, Baidu, Facebook and Oracle also rely on Nvidia chips for their clouds.

TPUs are custom-built for AI only, which means they’re inefficient at tasks like transcoding video into different qualities or formats.

NVDA currently supports every major machine-learning framework; Intel supports four, AMD supports two, Qualcomm supports two, and Google supports only Google’s.

The worldwide public cloud market is forecast to rise from $154 billion this year to nearly half a trillion dollars by 2026.

Despite the hype, nobody is beating Nvidia in AI

Google’s Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), which the company claims is 15-30 times faster than others’ central processing units (CPUs) and GPUs.

Google explicitly mentioned performance improvements over Nvidia’s tech; Nvidia says the underlying tests were conducted on Nvidia’s old hardware. Either way, Google is now offering customers the option to rent use of TPUs through its cloud.

Intel will release Lake Crest in 2017 specifically focused on AI.

Nvidia has improved the efficiency of its GPU chips about 10x over the past four years.

“Until TPUs demonstrate an unambiguous lead over GPUs in independent tests, Nvidia should continue to dominate the deep-learning data center”.

Impressive Titan V Shows Nvidia Will Continue To Grow, Maybe Just Not As Fast

by Erich Reimer

Summary

Nvidia has recently been facing increasing competition from other major tech players in the chip market, such as Intel.

The Titan V is an impressive and versatile GPU that demonstrates Nvidia retains the ability to continue to innovate and create new products.

Nvidia is likely to continue to dominate the chip market at a time when it is rapidly expanding.

However, there are questions regarding if Nvidia's growth rate will continue to justify its current rich forward-looking premium.

Nvidia likely will continue to grow due to the overall expanding AI-chip market and its strong investments in deep-learning CPU that may pay off immensely soon.

The recently-roaring Intel announced its NNP chip ("Nervana Neural Network Processor") in October with the direct intent to challenge Nvidia in the AI-capable processor market.

The chip is undoubtedly quite impressive, featuring high parallelism computing capabilities and focuses on keeping the data local, rather than in the connected system, in order to save processing costs and increase speed.

A TECHNOLOGY COMPANY FUELING BROADER TRENDS

Nvidia (NVDA) makes graphics processing units ("GPUs"), which are crucial to several high-demand tech niches.

Most people use these chips through video games and smartphones... But they're even used to mine for cryptocurrencies like bitcoin.

Nvidia has boomed with these tech trends. Two weeks ago, the company reported record revenues for the year: $9.7 billion, up 41% from last year.

The chart below shows share prices are rising, too... The stock is up nearly 120% over the past year. It recently hit record highs.

As interest in video games, mobile devices, and bitcoin continues to grow, expect Nvidia to benefit from its essential role behind the scenes...
