Facebook Tries to Take Down TikTok

Facebook is readying its war chest to go head to head against Chinese rival TikTok in the latest version of Reels wars across the world.

by VIDHI CHOUDHARY

"It’s already the biggest contributor to engagement growth on Instagram and it’s growing very quickly on Facebook too...

So looking ahead, we’re investing in simplifying video across Instagram, building more great creative and monetization tools for creators, and helping more people discover and interact with relevant Reels," said Zuckerberg.

Meta first launched Reels on Instagram in 2020 and on Facebook in 2021 in response to widely popular short-video app TikTok.

Facebook is launching its short video feature Reels to more than 150 countries, its owner Meta Platforms said on Tuesday (Feb 22), in a move to expand its fastest growing content format.

The social media giant, which recently lost a third of its market value after a dismal earnings report, has highlighted Reels as a key priority.

Meta launched Reels on Instagram in 2020 and on Facebook in 2021 as its answer to the explosively popular short-video app TikTok, which is owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance.

"Reels is already our fastest growing content format by far, and today we're making it available to everyone on Facebook globally," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

The company, which says video now accounts for half of the time people spend on Facebook, also announced new ways for creators to make money through the Reels feature.

It said it was expanding its programme to pay creators bonuses to more countries and was testing overlay ads using banners and stickers for creators to earn ad revenue. It would roll out full-screen ads between Reels soon.

Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that the company is working on the technical functionality for users to display their NFTs on Instagram.

Zuckerberg also added that users could even “mint” some NFTs within the app moving forwards, according to a Bloomberg report.

“We’re working on bringing NFTs to Instagram in the near term,” he said during an interview at the South by Southwest conference on March 15, though declining to share specifics on when and how the feature might work.

Meta has been looking into building NFT features into their existing products such as the company’s Novi digital wallet as early as last August, according to former Meta executive David Marcus.

Meta trades like value stock after US$500 billion rout

by Jeran Wittenstein

Meta now sells for less than 15 times estimated earnings, making it cheaper than the S&P 500 Value Index of companies.

There are too many unknowns — from the outlook for growth to the metaverse pivot — to buy the stock at this point.

Meta Platforms will make it easier for brands to run 3-dimensional ads on Facebook and Instagram through a new partnership with an ecommerce technology firm.

The integration with VNTANA will allow brands to upload the 3D models of their products to the social media platforms and easily convert them into ads, VNTANA said on Thursday (Mar 24) in a press release.

The move is a stepping stone into advertising in the metaverse, said VNTANA chief executive Ashley Crowder, referring to the futuristic idea of a collection of virtual worlds that can be accessed through different devices such as headsets.

Meta has staked its future on contributing to the building of the metaverse, which it has said could take up to a decade to be realised.
