Stocks to Buy for the Next 50 Years: General Electric (GE)

I’ll start with leading American industrial conglomerate General Electric Company (NYSE:GE). I figure that if General Electric has stood the test of time — it was, after all, one of the original Dow components 120 years ago — it will likely be going strong 50 years from now.

Eight years ago, I wouldn’t have included GE in this list of retirement stocks to buy. We were in the middle of the worst financial crisis in 100 years, and the company already had to go to Warren Buffett hat in hand to beg for money. GE Capital had gotten so large that the entire company looked more like a bank than an industrial concern.

Well, we’ve had some improvements on this front. Large swaths of GE’s financial empire have been either sold off or wound down. GE was just taken off the list of “systematically important financial institutions,” and the company is starting to look like a proper industrial giant again, being a leading producer of everything from aircraft engines to medical devices.

GE isn’t exceptionally cheap right now (few stocks are in this market), but if you’re looking at a 50-year time horizon, then buying at today’s prices is perfectly reasonable. GE stock pays a respectable 2.8% dividend. If you don’t need it today, I recommend you put it on automatic reinvestment and let the shares compound. You can accumulate a lot of shares in 50 years!

Buy This Iconic Stock Under $32

By Nick Lanyi

GE generates strong cash flows and is solid financially, with manageable long-term debt.

The stock yields nearly 3% at current prices, and its dividend could well rise in the coming years as it has in each of the past six.

At recent prices, the stock trades at 17.8 times analysts’ consensus estimate for 2017 earnings per share.

Risks To Consider: GE products are sold predominantly to businesses and are highly dependent on rising capital expenditures. The company thus is vulnerable to downturns in global business cycles, especially in energy, infrastructure and transportation.

Action To Take: Buy General Electric under $32.

This Stock Could Give Profits for Years

We're thinking creatively about infrastructure here, but most folks probably wouldn't think of this as an "infrastructure play."

I'm talking about General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE).

As I've written before, GE is well along on a corporate makeover spawned by the global financial crisis of 2008-09.

Its strengths in aircraft engines and locomotives make it a "direct" play – on transportation infrastructure. Obviously, rail freight is going to continue to accelerate over the coming decades, and GE locomotives will haul the load. And then there's the buildout of airports and the purchase of aircraft to handle surging demand.

But the real potential is because of GE's transition to a "digital industrial" company, meaning it's a direct play on the Internet of Everything (IoE) – a global network of interconnected devices that we're just beginning to scratch the surface of.

In other words, because of the company's Predix software and focus on the connected world, GE is a play on "digital infrastructure" – the infrastructure of the future.

Long term, this company will find plenty of demand for its offerings.

And that will make it an infrastructure wealth-builder for you.

General Electric Company (GE) Stock Hasn’t Looked This Healthy in a While

GE stock is set for more gains to finish out 2016 with a bang

By Dan Burrows

GE stock trades at 18 times forward earnings. No, that’s not a bargain-basement buy on a compound annual growth forecast of 12%. However, it’s hardly pricey by the standards of the current bull market.

Meanwhile, GE’s dividend yield currently sits at 3%. That’s competitive in today’s low-rate environment.

Grab GE Right Now… and Lock In Nearly 10% More Upside

By CHRIS JOHNSON

You can expect support in the $30.50 to $31.25 range – around 2% downside risk.

But there's upside all the way up to $33 or $34, about 8% in upside on the table.

And this is just the short term; there's longer-term bullish potential as the stock moves ahead of long-term technical resistance.

General Electric is a "Screaming Buy" today, ahead of tomorrow's announcement.

Here’s Why General Electric Company (GE) Stock Will Definitely Gain 20%-Plus/

With profits jumping and cash flowing, GE stock should reach $36 in 2017

When factoring in possible gains from President Donald Trump’s proposed tax reform and infrastructure spending plans, GE stock currently priced at just 15.5 times fiscal 2018 estimates of $1.91 per share, looks like a bargain.

GE stock is currently trading around $29.80. Assuming GE does achieve $2 per share in 2018, this puts the forward P/E at 15, or four points below the S&P 500 Index.

And when applying a reasonable multiple of 18 to those estimates, the stock’s fair value points to $36.
