Buy General Electric Stock for 50% Upside?

General Electric could rally to the $20 to $22 range, according to one analyst

By Bret Kenwell

Nicholas Heymann, an analyst from William Blair - shares can head to the $20 to $22 range:-
1. Oil prices increasing certainly helps
2. Three new directors
3. GE's aviation and health care segments should also continue to do well.
4. Shareholder and bondholder lawsuits can be resolved without impacting financials
5. Pension obligations could shrink throughout the year.
6. Ability to generate cash flow and pare down assets is improving at a better-than-expected rate

This research note does not jive with the idea that GE needs to do a secondary offering and slash its dividend, although Cramer acknowledged that he still thinks the company may need to raise capital.

Of course, the immediate argument to owning GE stock will be on trade concerns, Cramer concluded. The anti-globalization chatter could hurt General Electric, as former CEO Jeff Immelt was very supportive of global free trade.

Could GE finally draw interest?

Shares of General Electric rose 4% as investors speculated about the possibility of the industrial conglomerate potentially gaining the attention of activist or value investors.

Some commentators suggested that even Warren Buffett might be interested in investing in GE if the stock were to fall far enough, although it's unclear whether the Oracle of Omaha would seek to make a regular equity investment or structure a more complex and lucrative deal.

Skeptics remain convinced that General Electric has lost its way and that it'll take a long, drawn-out process to plot a successful turnaround, but that won't stop shares from responding to short-term hopes like this from time to time.

Is GE Now A Good Value?

by Bill Maurer

Summary

Shares hit new multi-year low despite market rally.

Annual yield nearly 65bps above 30-Year US Treasury.

Is the value finally there?

JPMorgan slapped a street low $11 price target on the name a few weeks ago. This was based on the notion that normalized free cash flow per share looks to be well below the street consensus, and we're not even at a trough.

On the flip side, there are those arguing for plenty of upside for the beaten down name, with Melius Capital stating that a breakup likely undervalues the business by 25% or more than previously estimated.

If you think that the street's projection of $1.06 in 2019 is fair or even low, then a forward P/E a little north of 12 with a dividend yield of 3.7% seems like a decent value at roughly half of the S&P 500's current trailing P/E ratio.

However, if you think the situation will get much worse and earnings per share could fall as low as say 80 cents next year (a bit worse than street low of $0.85), a P/E above 16 currently is a bit harder to stomach in a declining revenue/earnings scenario.

Ignore Naysaying for General Electric – It’s All Priced In

Analysts from Cowen and JPMorgan weighed in, but that's not the kind of stock GE is right now

By JAMES BRUMLEY

General Electric stock is oddly expensive compared to most of its peers, and the dividend — despite being cut in half in November — may well be subject to further cuts.

It’s Time to Take a Calculated Risk on General Electric Stock

by James Brumley

General Electric stock has completed an upside-down-head-and-shoulder pattern. And the bullish gap it left behind back on April 20 has since been filled in, and that retracement didn’t rekindle the bigger picture downtrend. In fact, GE shares have started to edge higher again.

The line in the sand is though — $15.22. That’s where General Electric has hit resistance a few times since February, and that’s where the 100-day moving average line (gray) is now.

Yes, the 200-day moving average line (green) at $18.71 looms above. It could — and likely will — present problems for the stock if GE stock can muster an attack on it in the first place.

General Electric expects profit in its aerospace business to climb in 2024, highlighting the potential earnings power of the world’s largest jet-engine maker as it prepares to become a standalone business.

GE Aerospace should produce as much as US$6.5 billion in operating profit this year, even as it takes on about US$600 million in costs as it becomes an independent company, GE said on Tuesday (Jan 23) in a statement announcing fourth-quarter results.

That compares to about US$6.1 billion in operating profit generated by the jet-engine division in 2023.
