How To Invest Like Carl Icahn

by Chris Katje

Icahn Enterprises (NASDAQ: IEP) conglomerate, which is a holding company owning assets in the railway, casino, auto parts and mining industries.

Investment Strategy: Icahn is an activist investor who accumulates large positions in companies he believes are undervalued. Icahn looks at companies that are trading with poor price-to-earnings ratios or book values that exceed market values.

“My investment philosophy, generally, with exceptions, is to buy something when no one wants it,” Icahn said.

Icahn normally becomes the largest shareholder of the company so he can push through changes.

Activist Investor Strategy: Among the moves that Icahn makes in the companies he takes stakes in are hostile takeovers, pushing for mergers and pushing to spin off or sell assets.

Icahn pushes for changes to the board of directors through his large ownership positions. He normally nominates a whole new slate of directors and then pushes for more changes.

Icahn is considered a short-term trader, as he seeks to unlock shareholder value and then sell his position when he has realized a gain.

Current Activist Trade: Icahn is the largest shareholder of Xerox Holdings (NYSE: XRX) and is pushing for the company to merge with HP Inc (NYSE: HPQ). He also owns a stake in HP.

Stocks to Buy: Icahn Enterprises (IEP)
RSI: 33.6

Carl Icahn’s holding company is one of those sum-of-the-parts situations where investors have to break down the billionaire’s holdings to figure out IEP stock’s value.

The RSI suggests that it’s nearly oversold right now, with its price down about 8% in the past month.

Long-term, IEP stock hasn’t been tremendously successful. It’s got a 10-year annualized total return of 11.8%, about 500 basis points less than the entire U.S. market.

However, the one analyst who covers IEP seems to like Icahn’s business. UBS has a “buy” rating and a $70 target for the stock, providing nearly 40% potential upside.

IEP has investments ranging from control positions to small minority investments in eight segments, including energy, automotive, food packaging and real estate.

It probably will take you days to comprehend all of Icahn Enterprises’ holdings fully. But when you do, it will likely have moved back to $70. At $50, it’s a buy.

Icahn Enterprises: 16% Dividend Yield And Market Correction Protection

by Bashar Issa

Summary

Icahn Enterprises will likely maintain the current dividend, yielding 16% at current prices.

Despite distributing more than it earns, 95% of shares are owned by Carl Icahn, who elects to receive the distribution in new equity, minimizing cash outflows.

The cost of cutting dividends is more than the notional amount IEP distributes to public shareholders who own the remaining 5% of shares.

A significant portion of Icahn's portfolio is hedged, protecting assets in case the recent market rout continues.

IEP has significant exposure to the energy sector, amounting to a third of its investment segment assets.

Last quarter, IEP's second-largest exposure by industry was consumer cyclical.

Carl Icahn: 'There Could Be a Recession or Even Worse'

By Cristian Bustos

“I have kept everything hedged for the last few years.

We have a strong hedge on against the long positions, and we try to be activists to get that edge… I am negative as you can hear.

Short term, I don’t even predict.”

“I really don’t know if they can engineer a soft landing… I think there is going to be a rough landing.”

Icahn drops 10% as Hindenburg takes a short position, accuses Carl Icahn of making a 'classic mistake'

by Senad Karaahmetovic

Making “a classic mistake of taking on too much leverage in the face of sustained losses:

Hindenburg highlights 3 reasons why Icahn shares are “inflated by 75%+”, namely:

1) IEP trades at a 218% premium to its last reported net asset value (NAV), vastly higher than all comparables;

2) clear evidence of inflated valuation marks for IEP’s less liquid and private assets; and

3) the company has suffered additional performance losses year to date following its last disclosure.

Short-seller also accused Icahn of using money taken in from new investors to pay out dividends to old investors.

Carl Icahn targeted by short seller Hindenburg for 'Ponzi-like' structure

by Josh Schafer

IEP’s 15.8% dividend yield, which it said is the largest of any U.S. large cap name.

Icahn has made a classic mistake of taking on too much leverage in the face of sustained losses:

The company is expected to report first quarter earnings on Friday followed by a conference call at 10 a.m. ET.

Icahn Enterprises is a holding company operated by Icahn, who along with his "affiliates" owns 85% of Icahn Enterprises.
