I Bought General Mills Stock On Monday

Summary

General Mills is a high quality (strong financials) that has grown its dividend on a consistent basis.

Its stock has declined reflecting short term earnings problems.

This is an opportunity to buy shares.

To be sure, there are reasons GIS shares have fallen.
1. It's revenues have stagnated and that is not going to turn around in a quarter or two,
2. Margins declined as a result of rising commodity prices and increasing supply chain [freight] costs,
3. Potential negative short term impact of the acquisition of Blue Buffalo (NASDAQ:BUFF)

Efforts by the company to overcome those difficulties:-
1. Investing in new product innovation [Blueberry Chex, Cheerios granola], expanding its offerings in its current line of organic products [yogurt, snack bars] as well as a stepped up marketing effort,
2. Building a more organic product line through eliminating artificial flavors and colors, reducing the sodium content,
3. Improving its e-commerce business,
4. A major restructuring and cost savings effort [supply chain optimization, reduced operational complexity] and
5. Acquisition of BUFF.

General Mills

While the branded food manufacturer has struggled amid changing consumer preferences for fresh over packaged food, a grocery price war set off by Amazon and Walmart, and other problems, analysts believe that food stocks have paid their dues.

Based on forward P/E ratios, the company’s stock is trading at a 20% discount to the broader market. That wasn’t the case just a few years ago when investors were paying premiums of 20% to 30%.

Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Pablo Zuanic writes that “recent share gains in snacks and cereal; potential for a rebound in margins; and a modest valuation” are all positive signs for General Mills. He upgraded the stock on March 22, according to Barron’s.

The Case for and Against General Mills, Inc. (GIS)

By Kelvin Wilson

Fundamental Analysis

General Mills, Inc. (GIS) currently trades with a market capitalization of $25.80 Billion. That value represents a market adjusting for revenues that have been growing by 2.35 % on a quarterly year/year basis as of the company’s last quarterly report.

You can get a sense of how sustainable that is by a levered free cash flow of $2.28 Billion over the past twelve months. Generally speaking, earnings are expected to fall in coming quarters. Analysts are forecasting earnings of $0.84 on a per share basis this quarter. Perhaps, that suggests something about why 1.18% of the outstanding share supply is held by institutional investors.

Worst Stocks to Buy: General Mills (GIS)

Some investors no doubt are going to take a chance on General Mills, Inc. (NYSE:GIS) after the company’s post-earnings plunge last month. GIS trades at a five-year low. It yields 4.3%.

It’s a 90-year-old company with well-known brands and a long, profitable history. From a distance, General Mills stock at $45 might look like an opportunity.

However, I don’t think that’s the case, and I think it’s highly likely it gets worse for GIS before it gets better. I wrote after fiscal first-quarter earnings back in September that General Mills had lost investor trust when it came to both revenue and margins.

Two quarters later, those problems are only more pressing — and General Mills has proven that it has little in the way of answers.

In a somewhat odd way, GIS is reminiscent of General Electric Company (NYSE:GE). In both cases, bulls focused on the history and the dividend, while glossing over near-term problems and reasonably significant debt levels.

I’m not sure GIS’ trend will be quite as bad as that of GE, which has lost half of its value in less than two years, or that a General Mills dividend cut is on the way. But the case of GE, the underlying problems in the business led to a long, slow decline as investors adjusted to the new reality. That’s a very real risk that a similar process will play out at GIS over the next few months.

Blue-Chip Stocks That Aren’t Really Blue Chips: General Mills

Let’s talk about cereal. Well, General Mills, Inc. (NYSE:GIS) isn’t just about cereal. It’s about all kinds of other consumer food brands, but these are food brands that consumers are running away from in droves.

The big push toward healthy eating has devastated the earnings power of companies like General Mills. I see nothing in the way of innovation or market pivot to make me think that things are going to change.

GIS stock as $1.75 billion in trailing 12 month net income, meaning the stock trades at almost 15 times earnings. The only problem is the average annual earnings growth analyst project over the next five years is a mere 6%.

General Mills (GIS) makes a variety of food staples that can be found in pantries and refrigerators around the world.

The iconic food producer is probably best known for its cereal brands, such as Cheerios, but, it also owns Pillsbury, Bisquick, and Betty Crocker in the baking aisle, as well as Green Giant in the vegetable space and Annie’s, which provides a variety of dinner kits,

Jeff Harmening, General Mills CEO, recently stated the company has seen double digit increases in its home food market in China in the past few months, and is looking for similar numbers in the U.S. as COVID-19 essentially shuts down restaurants.

Harmening said the initial onset of the virus saw an increase in customer purchases of long shelf-life items. But, after the first four weeks of the virus onset, the increase in demand has become systemic, and can be seen across all of the company’s brands and products.

General Mills had sales of $4.2 billion in its latest quarterly release, with a slight decline in organic volume, which was offset by higher prices and sales of premium products.

Over the prior nine months the company had an operating profit of $2.1 billion, which was an 18% increase year-over-year.

While the stock has traded with much higher volatility since the coronavirus crisis, it is now essentially where it was prior to the crisis, trading around $52 with a PE of just over 15.

HITTING NEW HIGHS BY PROVIDING THE FOODS THE WORLD LOVES

Today's company is another example of "selling the basics"...

Some companies provide everyday items that we can't live without. It may not sound exciting... But selling consumables – like soda and cleaning products – is a proven business model.

And as folks have stocked up on snacks and food to make at home during the pandemic, today's company has thrived...

General Mills (GIS) is a $40 billion packaged-foods giant. The company has been around for more than 150 years, with a presence in more than 100 countries.

It provides iconic brands like Cheerios cereal, Gold Medal flour, and Betty Crocker desserts. And demand for these products has increased during the pandemic as more folks eat at home...

General Mills recently reported that its fourth-quarter net sales were up 21% to $5 billion, citing an increase in at-home-food demand.

GIS shares are up 24% so far this year, including dividends. They recently hit a new multiyear high. And as people keep stocking up and making their own dinner instead of eating out, that trend should continue...
