highly profitable General Motors is set to go public this week in what is expected to be the largest and hottest initial public offering of 2010.

GM, once synonymous with America's industrial ills, has been reborn since it emerged from bankruptcy protection in July 2009. The No. 1 U.S. auto maker earned $2 billion in the third quarter, and it has a great balance sheet with almost $35 billion in cash.

That cash largely comes courtesy of the U.S. government, which forked over $49.5 billion to help restructure the company. Uncle Sam now holds a 61% equity stake and will sell stock in the IPO.

GM is due to sell 365 million shares on Wednesday in a projected price range of $26 to $29 a share. That would value it around $50 billion. The deal is expected to generate strong demand because of GM's revival and because the stock looks inexpensive relative to that of a resurgent Ford, whose shares, at around $16, are up 60% this year.

NEW YORK—In a sign of the changing fortunes of the world's top two economies, China's biggest auto maker, SAIC Motor Corp., is negotiating to acquire a stake of about 1% in General Motors Co. worth about $500 million, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The U.S. auto maker also is prepared to sell more than $1 billion worth of shares to sovereign wealth funds in the Middle East and Asia. Combined, the sales would give foreign investors roughly 16% of the shares to be sold next week under an initial public offering of stock, and give them a stake of some 4% in the Detroit auto maker. GM declined to comment on the investment talks.

The issue of overseas investors buying GM shares in the company's IPO has been a sensitive one for the U.S. government, which plans to reduce its 61% stake in the auto maker to about 35% through the IPO.

All-American Stocks to Buy: General Motors (GM)

Market Cap: $58 billion

Founded in Flint, Michigan, in 1908, General Motors (GM) has been a staple of American industry for more than 100 years.

Starting with only the Buick brand, GM now encompasses the Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC lines as well.

Despite the devastation GM endured during the financial crisis — General Motors needed a bailout to save it from utter insolvency — the company is back on its feet now, and in 2014 posted net income of nearly $4 billion.

Today, General Motors has the highest U.S. market share of any auto manufacturer, commanding 17.7% of the domestic market so far in 2015.

Year-to-date U.S. sales volume is also up 4.9% from 2015 — a figure led by the roaring growth in its light-truck sales, which have jumped 18.3% year-over-year.

Boasting a 4% annual dividend to boot, this All-American stock is worth a glance.

General Motors Company (GM) Is THE Bargain-Bin Dividend Stock to Buy Now

GM stock’s attractive dividend and the company's future potential make it a good long-term play

By Laura Hoy

GM stock’s dividend yield of 5.15% makes waiting out some turbulence in China and a possible lull in U.S. demand much more attractive as well.

With a price-to-earnings ratio of just 4.43, GM stock looks relatively cheap, making now an ideal entry point for long-term investors.
