Top Stocks That Every Trader Should Follow: Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS)

Investment banking giant Goldman Sachs (GS) is at the center of the finance industry. Its exposure to corporate activity — ranging from mergers and acquisitions to capital markets activities — spans into just about every industry imaginable.

So, when corporate finance activity and all that goes with it begins to pick up after an economic slowdown — or conversely, begins to slow down after a prolonged economic expansion cycle — Goldman Sachs as a firm will know about it well ahead of time.

Luckily for traders and investors, Goldman tends to provide early signals for economic cycle tops and bottoms, as well as nearer-term gyrations in the broader market.

Take the broader stock market lows in 2009 for example. Shares of GS stock actually bottomed in late 2008, several months before the broader stock market did. At that time, Goldman signaled strong bullish reversals that allowed aware traders to get long the stock for big gains.

The same once again happened in 2015 when GS stock topped in June with a big and obvious bearish reversal and quickly began to notably trend lower. Meanwhile, the U.S. stock market didn’t begin to accelerate lower until later in the year/early 2016.

Finally, from a technical perspective, GS tends to behave well, reacts to its near- and medium-term moving averages and generally gives fairly clear signals as to its intended near- to medium-term direction.

Fall Stocks to Buy: Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS)

Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) has been working hard to keep its share price up in the low-interest-rate market environment we have been operating in for the past few years.

While we’ve traded GS successfully on the bearish side at SlingShot Trader in years past, we now think it is finally starting to turn the corner. The stock is breaking through key resistance levels and has quite a bit of upside potential.

The bullish boost GS has been waiting for could come from the FOMC. If the FOMC raises rates again in 2016, chances are good the U.S. Treasury yield curve is going to steepen … and a steep yield curve is good for banks.

It means GS can borrow money at lower interest rates and lend money at higher interest rates. The difference between the low interest rate the bank borrows at and the higher interest rates it lends at is called “net interest margin.”

A narrow net interest margin means lower revenues for the bank, while a wider net interest margin means higher revenues for the bank.

We expect higher revenues are in store for Goldman Sachs as Wall Street adjusts its interest-rate expectations and the yield curve starts to steepen after a prolonged period of flattening.

This should be good news for GS shareholders.

Best Dow Jones Stocks to Buy: Goldman Sachs (GS)

Much of the rally in the Dow Jones has come from gains at Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS). The vampire squid has been surging over the last few months on the back of the so-called Trump Bump. But, the real win is that GS could keep those gains going in the year ahead.

There are two big reasons why.

First, Goldman has shifted much of its focus away from proprietary trading. Historically, stock, currency and derivatives trading has made up the bulk of GS’s revenue. However regulation and low interest rates have limited the effect of these businesses.

Well, with Trump in charge, it’s now game-on for those businesses as he has vowed to cancel/veto plenty of regulations in the financial industry. Janet Yellen and company have also helped with the latest interest rate boost.

Secondly, Goldman has moved back heavily into good old fashioned investment banking, as its trading arm was hindered under regulations. M&A advising, asset management and commercial lending have all increased at Goldman.

These activities are only expected to rise over the next year as the economy strengthens. And, Goldman will make plenty of fees from all that book running, interest rate spreads and management fees.

This has only boosted quarterly and yearly earnings estimates for the Dow Jones stock. Meanwhile, GS stock shares remain cheap at a forward P/E of only 13.

For investors, this means that Goldman is one of the best Dow Jones stocks to buy in terms of value.

Stocks to Buy: Goldman Sachs (GS)

If you were asked to compile a list of the “Big Banks” that have financed America’s growth, as well as her ascension to greatness, it’s hard not to start with Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS).

The premier investment bank has been at the center of the financial world since the reparative, post-Civil War years, when it helped finance America’s rebirth beginning in 1869.

Since then the company has had a storied history of providing the capital, as well as the financial framework, that’s nurtured the rise of the greatest capitalist experiment in history.

In another example of Trumpian irony, the president criticized the banks — and specifically Goldman Sachs — for transgressions that caused the near-collapse of the financial system in 2008.

Yet who did Trump turn to for key positions in his campaign and in his cabinet? You guessed it, numerous Goldman Sachs alumni.

The moral of the story here is that when you want your own administration to be great, you turn to those who have done great things at one of the greatest American financial institutions.

Stocks to Buy: Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS)

Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was right in the eye of the Great Recession storm. The company even received a $10 billion bailout from the government during the meltdown.

In the years since the crisis, new regulations and capital requirements severely hindered bank earnings. For GS stock, the heaviest weight has been the Volcker Rule. The Volcker Rule is a provision in the Dodd-Frank Act that prevents banks from performing certain types of speculative trading.

Despite the regulatory headwinds, GS has found a way to ramp up its earnings in recent years. Goldman’s net income is up more than 180% since 2009, making GS stock an even better value today than it was back then. Goldman’s current price-to-earnings ratio is only 14.2, 19% lower than it was on March 9, 2009.

Looking ahead, Donald Trump has pledged to eliminate many of the regulations that have been holding back the big banks. Goldman stock is in an even better position and it is a better value today than it was in the years following the Great Recession.

Stocks to Sell as Fear Returns: Goldman Sachs (GS)

Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was one of the leading stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average during the post-election ramp to new record highs above the 20,000 level.

Ostensibly, this was driven by hopes for deregulation and the net interest margin lift from the “Trump-flation” rise in long-term interest rates.

Then in January, GS easily beat revenue and earnings expectations; revs of $8.17 billion topped the Street’s mark for $7.42 billion, while earnings of $4.88 per share cruised ahead of $3.82 estimates. Goldman Sachs was propped up in large part by a big bump in trading at the end of the year.

But investors, who started to sour on overbought financials a few days before Goldman’s report, also seem to have forgotten the company’s strong quarterly results.

Shares are now under pressure, falling below their 50-day moving average as a profit-taking dynamic materializes.

Goldman’s next earnings don’t come until April 18. Analysts are looking for earnings of $4.90 per share on revenues of $8.8 billion.
