Electronic Arts Estimates For 2019 Don't Make Sense
Mar. 29, 2019

by Michael Henage

Summary

When Apex Legends was released investors got excited. Though the shares have settled down, the game is still going strong.

Sometimes figuring out whether a game will be a hit is as simple as looking at what gamers are willing to pay.

A Star Wars game that doesn't offer multiplayer or battle royale, could ironically be exactly what gamers want.

When estimates and logic don't match, I tend to go with logic.

With Apex looking like a hit, Anthem and Fallen Order don’t have to be runaway successes for EA to outperform.

No matter how you look at it, EA seems like a misunderstood story.

EA Gains as ‘Star Wars’ Countdown Leaves Gamers Optimistic

by Kamaron Leach

(Bloomberg) -- Electronic Arts Inc. is on pace to gain for a third consecutive session, as gamers await the tight-lipped reveal of the latest Star Wars title Saturday afternoon.

According to Stephens Inc., mixed reviews for the game suggest player sentiment is “best described as cautiously optimistic.”

But the company’s forthcoming release of “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” has room for upside to consensus, writes analyst Jeff Cohen in a research note.

Shares of EA rose as much as 1.8 percent Thursday to their highest intraday in over a week.

While questions remain about monetization, Cohen sees the new Star Wars release as the type of story-driven, single-player game that “fits very well with what fans are looking for.”

EA Is Making 2 Brilliant Moves With "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order"

These things should improve the odds that the game will succeed in the market.

by Ashraf Eassa

1. EA didn't force Respawn Entertainment to use Frostbite for that title. Instead, the studio is using Unreal Engine 4 to build the game.

2. No microtransactions, no loot boxes

Electronic Arts Is On Sale And I'm Buying

Apr. 17, 2019

by James Bonifer

Summary

EA announced that Star Wars: Fallen Order would not feature micro-transactions and the market was not happy.

Given what happened last time they tried this, management is making a very wise move.

The game could still be a massive revenue source without in-game transactions as proven by Spider-Man and Red Dead.

Financial performance is strong and EA is wise to avoid creating a scenario where their live services sales are put at risk again.

EA is a strong buy with significant potential for upside.

The company announced the game would be a single player adventure, and would not feature any predatory monetization practices. Wall Street immediately reacted negatively.

I am giving EA a strong buy with a price target of $125.

Electronic Arts: Apex Legends Disappointment Signals Substantial Pain Ahead

Apr. 22, 2019

Summary

Twitch and Google data show interest in Apex Legends is fading quickly.

Popular streamers and influencers are quitting Apex.

Apex is wildly overvalued for a fading game.

With Apex making up a substantial portion of EA's valuation, EA's stock faces substantial declines.

Apex is overvalued. It is successful for a Battle Royale game, but it won't reach Fortnite levels.

So if Apex only has about 10% of the Google searches that Fortnite has, ~20% of its Twitch viewers, and ~4% of Fortnite's YouTube searches, what does this all mean?

There can only be one conclusion - The player base of Apex Legends is either declining or stagnant.

Apex isn't the "rocket growth" game that analysts once praised. If we had to put a number to Apex's player base, we estimate it at between 10-20 million, far from the 50 million that played it in its glory days.

We did some fact checking into lag claims and it turned out to be true. A YouTuber and coder discovered some problems with Apex Legends coding.

As for the lack of content updates, it may be an even worse problem. Despite massive hype for the Season 1 battle pass, it well... was terrible. This popular thread on Reddit describes the problem. While people expected great content from the pass, they got cheap filler.

If Apex Legends is worth an aggressive 15-20% of Fortnite, that would mean Apex would only be worth $1.8-$2.4 billion, or way lower than the $7.4 billion+ valuation ascribed to it by the market a few days after it launched. Even now, the market still thinks Apex is worth ~$4.5 billion.

MKM cuts amid likely 'Apex Legends' peak

May 3, 2019

By: Jason Aycock

Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA) is 0.9% lower premarket with MKM Partners cutting the shares to Neutral, from Buy.

Risk/reward is less compelling now, and the debut of Apex Legends may have made for a "head fake" of upward revisions, analyst Eric Handler says.

That battle-royale game (a "hit but not a grand slam") may have peaked for the near term, he says. (h/t Bloomberg)

The company's not likely to issue initial EPS guidance beyond $4.10-$4.20 for fiscal 2020, he says, vs. consensus for $4.52 (and MKM's estimate for $4.36).

Handler raised his price target to $100, implying 6% upside.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet had estimated adjusted earnings of 97 cents a share on bookings of $1.2 billion.

For the fiscal first quarter, analysts model net income of $69 million on bookings of $806 million.

For the full fiscal year, analysts estimate net income of $1.09 billion on bookings of $5.17 billion.

EA said it expects fiscal 2020 full-year net income of $2.6 billion on bookings of $5.1 billion. The videogame maker says it forecasts first quarter net income of $1.77 billion on bookings of $690 million and the first quarter includes a one-time tax benefit of $1.5 billion.
