IT'S A BULL MARKET IN SMARTPHONES

Today's chart shows a tech leader in a powerful uptrend...

With the coronavirus keeping folks away from each other, many of us rely on our devices more than ever. We already used our smartphones often to keep in touch with friends and family, go shopping, and order food...

But this year, with social distancing and stay-at-home orders, our phones were sometimes our only options. It's one more tailwind for this popular cellphone maker...

Apple (AAPL) makes the iPhone and numerous other electronics and accessories. Apple's lineup of interconnected devices, linked with the company's exclusive software, keeps customers loyal.

The company saw sales fall sharply in February as coronavirus hit China, a big Apple market... But sales were already back up in March and continued improving in April.

AAPL shares are up more than 70% over the past year despite the coronavirus crash. They just hit a new all-time high. Apple's devices and software have become necessities for much of the world, and customers will keep coming back for more...

Sometimes the simple investment is the smart one

Apple's share price has popped roughly 50% over the past three months as investors have looked to tech stocks as a type of investment haven during the pandemic. But there are plenty of reasons why Apple will continue to be a great investment long after this tech-stock bump has faded.

For example, the company's wearable devices segment (which includes its home and accessories products), reached $6.3 billion in sales in the second quarter, thanks to its popular Apple Watch and Airpods lineup.

Apple's wearable future is brighter than ever, as the company continue to release new iterations of popular devices, like its AirPods Pro, and build on its already-impressive 29% market share in the wearable tech space.

Aside from wearables, Apple has a tremendous opportunity with its budding services business as well, thanks to its App Store, Apple Music, Apple News+, Apple TV+, and Apple Arcade.

Services revenue reached an all-time high of $13 billion in the most recent quarter, and some projections put the company's annual services revenue at $100 billion by 2024.

Adding to all of this is the fact that a 5G-enabled iPhone could spur new demand for the company's smartphone, and usher in what many call an upgrade supercycle among current iPhone users.

While the iPhone isn't as important to Apple as it used to be, the demand would not only give Apple additional device revenue, but also many years' worth of services and wearable revenue as well.

Finally, Apple proved that the company still has a very forward-looking approach to its devices and services when it announced at its WWDC20 conference that it's switching its Mac computers from Intel chips to its own Apple-designed silicon.

The move may be subtle to most users, but investors should see it as yet another way for Apple to consolidate even more control over its products, and likely make them better and more efficient so that it can continue to outpace its competitors.

When you add all of this up and throw in Apple's bent toward massive share repurchases, this tech giant looks as strong as ever and well-positioned for its next season of growth.

Apple

This technology giant has been on a roll since the sell-off, but there are some concerns on forward iPhone demand.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) designs, manufactures and markets consumer electronics and computers, and has developed its own proprietary iOS and Mac OS X operating systems and related software platform/ecosystem.

Revenues are derived principally from the iPhone line of smartphones, hardware sales of the Macintosh family of notebook and desktop computers, iPad tablets and iPod portable digital music players. The company also realizes revenue from software, peripherals, digital media and services.

Shareholders receive a 1.45% dividend. BofA Securities has a $390 price target on the shares, and the Wall Street consensus target is $318.84. Apple stock closed trading most recently at $373.85.

Why Apple Stock Fell Today

The popular tech-stock's rally won’t last, according to one analyst.

by Joe Tenebruso

Goldman reiterated its sell rating on Apple's stock. Even after raising its target price from $268 to $299, its new price forecast represents potential downside of nearly 20% for investors, based on Apple's closing price of $371.38.

Robinhood Stocks: Apple (AAPL) Stock Chart Showing Buy-the-dip Zone

For about a year, AAPL stock has commanded a higher valuation than the olden days. It is now trading with a 40% premium to its prior price-earnings ratio.

But the experts assure us that it is appropriate because it is less of a product company and more of one that derives a big chunk of income from services. They are finally making the turn into the new normal of tech stocks, joining the likes of Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT).

The fundamentals of Apple are beyond reproach, and while I am not a fan of what Tim Cook is doing strategically, I can’t short it. The problem is that even though the current income no longer depends on the sale of iPhones, the current services do depend on the machines already in circulation.

If the innovation fizzles, Android will eat away at Apple’s market share and that can hurt it in the long term.

The diehard AAPL fans would chuckle at this notion, but it is a fact that there are more non-Apple smart phones in the world, and that the threat is real. This alone is not a reason to short the stock — in fact, my message today is to buy it but on dips.

Regardless of how great the chart looks, buying full positions into any stock at its all-time highs is full of risk. There is literally more downside than upside from that point.

Technically, I would much rather buy Apple shares near $360, where I know it will find footing on the first drop.

An 8% correction in today’s market seems like an improbable event, but they do happen and they don’t announce themselves ahead of time.

Conversely, if the bulls can break out beyond $400 then there would be a $30 chase trade from there.

Apple (AAPL)

This beacon of consumer electronics companies has finally become a media contender. By that, I mean Apple TV.

The challenge with creating a “walled garden” of equipment and software (i.e., Apple products support Apple devices) is that when you want to break out into the broader world of non-Apple consumers, it can be tough slogging.

But the pandemic certainly helped Apple pull this off. And a good amount of new programming that has critics talking about its quality content has helped as well.

Add to that the recent ruling in Ireland that Apple doesn’t owe $14 billion in taxes will be a boost to its bottom line.

The stock is up 33% year to date and 90% in the past 12 months, pretty good for company with a $1.7 trillion market cap.

And AAPL stock still has a 2.7% dividend.
