Best Stocks to Buy for the Next Decade: Amazon (AMZN)

Not only is Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) CEO and founder Jeff Bezos a great chief executive, but Amazon has its hands in so many pies — including a very profitable cloud business that generates almost $1 billion in annual operating income — that it’s hard to fathom just how big Amazon could be a decade from now.

While Amazon’s AWS cloud business is a big deal, Amazon Prime is the service that delivers the goods when it comes to building the foundation for AMZN stock. More than 100 million people subscribe to Amazon Prime at $99 per year.

It’s not the $9.9 billion in annual subscription revenue that matters, but the amount each of those subscribers spends on other Amazon products.

Statistics show that 76% of Amazon Prime members spend more than they did before paying the annual $99 fee.

That’s what you call “pulling power,” and it’s a big reason why AMZN stock will be a winner for the long haul.

Stocks to Buy: Amazon (AMZN)

Year-to-date Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has already soared by 56%.

But even with shares at $1,176, we can see that the Street still sees AMZN spiking over 11% to $1,311.

In fact, in the last three months this stock has received an eyebrow-raising 33 buy ratings vs. just one hold rating.

The most recent rating comes from top RBC Capital analyst Mark Mahaney. He has just carried out a survey on Amazon’s intelligent personal assistant Alexa. And he likes what he sees.

“Following our third annual Alexa survey, we are more impressed with the traction of these devices and more convinced of their potential long-term impact. With tens of millions of users and 20K+ skills, we see Alexa’s value prop as becoming increasingly powerful as awareness and ownership ramp. We think AMZN could see $10-$11B in Alexa-related Rev by 2020.”

In fact, recent reports suggest Alexa made a popular holiday gift. On Christmas Day, Amazon’s Alexa app took the No. 1 spots on both the U.S. Google Play and iPhone App Stores’ free app charts.

Amazon posts largest profit in its history on sales, tax boost

By Jeffrey Dastin and Aishwarya Venugopal

(Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) on Thursday reported a profit near $2 billion, the largest in its history, as the online retailer drew millions of new customers to its Prime fast-shipping club for the holiday season and as changes to U.S. tax law added to its bottom line.

Shares rose more than 6.4 percent in extended trading, after previously closing down 4 percent on the Nasdaq.

Seattle-based Amazon is using fast shipping, television shows exclusive to its website and forays into new technology, such as its voice-controlled Alexa devices, to win and keep high-spending Prime members. Its $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ:WFM) last year is helping it capture shoppers' grocery sales, too.

The world's largest online retailer said net income more than doubled to $1.86 billion, or $3.75 per share in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31. Its profit received a provisional $789 million boost from the U.S. Republican tax bill passed in December.

Analysts on average were expecting just $1.85 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. (http://tmsnrt.rs/24gibla)

Advertising and other revenue rose 62 percent to $1.74 billion.

Amazon's stock has outperformed the S&P 500, rising almost 50 percent since the start of the fourth quarter, compared with the S&P's 12 percent rise.

Its shares trade at a premium to many peers. The stock's price-to-earnings ratio is nearly 12 times that of cloud computing rivals Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT), for instance.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is dueling with Microsoft to handle data and computing for large enterprises, saw its profit margin expand from the third quarter.

AWS posted a 45 percent rise in sales to $5.1 billion.

Amazon said it expects operating profit in the current quarter of between $300 million and $1 billion. Analysts were expecting $1.5 billion, according to analytics firm FactSet Street Account.

Amazon.com, Inc.’s Road to $1,800

AMZN stock has a number of strong and growing tailwinds

By CHARLES PAYNE

1. Financial Execution: Sales were up 34% in North America and 29% internationally
2. The Cloud: AWS dominate
3. Retail: AMZN has already bought Whole Foods and rolled out a cashless store

AMZN has been in an uptrend for years and I expect the trajectory to continue higher. In fact, I think it has a date with $1,800 sometime in 2018 or early 2019.

Amazon’s revenue and earnings grew strongly in the fourth quarter, blowing past our expectations.

The company leads all others in both the retail and cloud sides of the business, so it’s encouraging to see it growing so strongly from such a large base.

Amazon has started talking about its advertising revenue, which means this is on the verge of becoming another major growth driver.

Then, of course, there’s Alexa -- which enabled it to become the leading provider of voice controlled devices by building an ecosystem around it. Google may try to catch up, but Amazon is no Apple (Google’s Android came from behind to become the leading mobile OS), it isn’t as interested in profits as growth, so this market won’t be so easy to wrest from Amazon.

The competition in the cloud and also voice controlled devices will mostly gain from market growth and not so much from wresting share from Amazon.

All that being said, it may be a good idea to keep in sight Amazon’s long term debt and obligations as well as FCF net of long term obligation repayments as they represent increasing risk.

Amazon loses US$54 billion in market value after Donald Trump ‘threatened to go after it’

Trump talked about changing Amazon’s tax treatment because he worries about family-run retailers being put out of business, the Axios website reported.

During an interview in May 2016, Trump claimed Bezos has a big antitrust issue related to Amazon.

Bezos was critical of Trump during the campaign, even joking about sending the candidate to space.

Here's the controversial tax practice by Amazon that's got Trump so upset

President Trump criticized Amazon over taxes on social media Thursday.

Amazon does collect state sales taxes on products it sells directly in all 45 states that have a state sales tax.

But the company still doesn't collect state sales taxes for its "third-party" platform sellers in most of the country.

Some states have passed laws requiring online marketplaces to collect sales taxes on behalf of third-party sellers.

On April 1, Pennsylvania will become the second state, after Washington, where Amazon is instituting Marketplace Tax Collection for third-party sellers.

Valuation Is a Concern for Amazon.com Stock, but Trump Isn’t

The valuation on Amazon stock is falling back into realistic territory

By LUKE LANGO

Amazon collects sales tax in all 45 states that have a sales tax. Thus, even if legislation is passed forcing Amazon to collect sales tax in the 5 remaining states (Montana, Delaware, Alaska, New Hampshire, and Oregon), that will hardly dent the company’s operations.

Antitrust law only kicks in once the consumer is being hurt by monopolistic practices.

This couldn’t be further from the truth in Amazon’s case. Amazon has created an e-retail behemoth that caters exclusively to consumers, at the expense of its own margins.

First, there is the North American retail segment. This segment posted revenues of $106 billion last year on operating margins of nearly 3% and climbing. Revenue growth has been consistently in the 20-30% range, but offline retail expansion (namely, the acquisition of Whole Foods) super-charged North America retail revenue growth to above 40% last quarter.

International retail segment ($54 billion in revenues on 20%-plus growth).

Amazon Web Services segment ($17 billion in revenues, 40%-plus growth, and 25% operating margins).

Amazon stock should be able to fetch a healthy 25 to 30 multiple on those $70 earnings. But even at those big multiples, that still only implies an AMZN stock price of between $1,750 and $2,100 in 5 years.

Discount those back by 10% per year, and you arrive at a present value of between $1,100 and $1,300.
