Sell Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) Stock Before Trump Gets Revenge

The Trump administration looks poised to investigate Amazon, which would weigh on AMZN stock

By Larry Ramer

Trump also lashed out at Bezos and Amazon during the campaign, saying that the CEO “bought The Washington Post to have political influence” and ominously warning that “if I become president, oh do they (i.e. Amazon) have problems. They’re going to have such problems.”

In the course of the campaign, Trump also warned that Amazon has a “huge antitrust problem.”

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating whether Amazon misleads users about its discounts, and the government is probing the e-commerce giant for possibly violating the sanctions that Washington has leveled against Iran.

The bad news on Amazon’s stock price is only beginning

Analyst downward revisions tend to beget even more such revisions

So far this August, in contrast, there have been no upward revisions and 93% of analysts have issued downward revisions. This is despite the company winning FTC approval for its intended takeover of Whole Foods Market WFM, +0.02% .

Analyst revisions don’t occur randomly. A downward revision is more likely to be followed by another downward revision than by an upward one.

How Amazon Shares Can Still Triple in Value, Out to 2025

By Jon C. Ogg

One key driver is that Amazon’s percentage of all retail spending has reached 5.1% as of 2016. MKM Partners is calling for that to reach a total share of 15.5% by 2025 and even eclipse Wal-Mart over time.

On the Amazon Web Services (AWS) business, MKM’s longer-term call is that AWS can grow its cloud revenues 20% per year for another eight years. The view is that the cloud is the largest redefinition of computing since the PC-era.

We apply a 30x P/E to commerce and 35x to AWS earnings to our estimates for 2022, which we think the stock will trade at by 2021. This implies a $2,010 stock in 3.5 years. We apply a discount rate of 20% per year to get to out $1,275 target by mid-2018.

Stocks to Buy for the Next Decade: Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN)

From one standpoint, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) might seem an odd choice for this list. Most investors would agree that Amazon will at least be around ten years from now.

But I imagine many are skeptical that a stock with a forward P/E of 125x won’t come back to Earth at some point.

But I continue to believe that it is short-sighted to assume AMZN stock is overvalued purely based on its P/E ratio. And from a qualitative standpoint, I’d add that no company of its size is better-positioned for growth over the next decade than Amazon.

Valuation aside, it’s fascinating to think where Amazon could be a decade for now. Amazon Web Services already is the preeminent cloud provider, well ahead of tech titans like Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL).

The acquisition of Whole Foods Market will jumpstart the company’s brick-and-mortar ambitions. And the company very well may have a delivery network that rivals FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) and United Parcel Service, Inc. (NYSE:UPS).

Regardless of its current valuation, Amazon likely is going to dominate the next decade, both in the U.S. and worldwide. And that makes the stock a buy and hold, particularly since its earnings power is much greater than headline numbers suggest.

Amazon

This absolute leader in online retail and dominant player in cloud storage business remains the top internet pick at many firms on Wall Street.

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) serves consumers through retail websites that primarily include merchandise and content purchased for resale from vendors and those offered by third-party sellers.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is also the undisputed leader in the cloud now, and many top analysts see the company expanding and moving up the enterprise information value chain and targeting a larger total addressable market. The company serves developers and enterprises through AWS that provides compute, storage, database, analytics, applications and deployment services that enable virtually various businesses.

The company absolutely blew out earnings, with the top and bottom lines beating Wall Street estimates. International, retail, subscriptions (Prime) and AWS all came in above expectations. Amazon’s share should continue to expand, supported by new categories.

Most on Wall Street agree that Amazon remains the top destination for increased spending during this year’s holidays with broad advances in toys and electronics.

Toss in the fact that Amazon Prime members receive free shipping on many products and there is no reason to believe that the company will not continue its domination of internet sales.

The $1,270 SunTrust price target compares with the $1,258.16 consensus target. Shares were last seen at $1,162.
